Description	:	Frederick Shafer was born in Darnstadt, Germany the son of Alterman John and Emma Marie Schafer. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran Church in Germany He came to this country with his mother and only brother when he was fourteen years old. His father had died when he was three years old. He was married to Otillie Emma Obert on June 1, 1865 in St Louis, Missouri. Read More	Frederick Shafer was born in Darnstadt, Germany the son of Alterman John and Emma Marie Schafer. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran Church in Germany He came to this country with his mother and only brother when he was fourteen years old. His father had died when he was three years old. He was married to Otillie Emma Obert on June 1, 1865 in St Louis, Missouri. They moved to Scott County, Iowa and lived there until September 1874 when they came to Malcom, Poweshiek County, Iowa. Otillie passed away on June 6, 1889. There were ten children born to this union; six sons and four daughters. The youngest son, Frank, died when he was six years old and the eldest daughter, Mary, died in 1917. The rest are: Lizzie, Caroline, John, George, Henry, Fred, Tillie and Charles. He retired from the farm and moved to Grinnell in September 1904. He lived there until the fall of 1911 when he moved to McAllen, Texas where he lived for a year and a half. He then lived in San Deigo, California for about five years and since then has made his home with his daughters in Grundy and Marshall Counties in Iowa. He took sick Christmas day with pneumonia and was taken to the Hospital in Marshalltown where he passed away on December 30, 1927 at the age of 90 years 3 months 1 day. Grandfather Schafer lived a strictly honest honorable upright life in all of his dealings with his fellowmen. In regard to his relation to his Creator he endeavored to obey the Word, he believed and was baptized. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Malcom with Rev Burdock conducting the services. The remains were laid at rest in the Ivy Hill Cemetery rural Malcom, Iowa.
