He had a chronic lung condition. He was born April 18, 1916, on a farm east of Axtell, KS, the son of Frederic and Clara Rastle Severin. He graduated from St. Michael's High School at Axtell in 1934. He worked on the family farm. In 1940 he moved to Baltimore, MD, to work in the shipyards during World War II. He returned to the family farm. On July 3, 1943, he married Loraine "Bettie" Becker at St. Michael's Church in Axtell. They moved to Sac City, IA, where they farmed. She died on July 7, 1977. Fred started a large scale hog confinement operation. This farrow to finish operation was designed in conjunction with Iowa State University and was the first of its kind in Iowa, producing over 1,000 head of hogs per year. This unique hog operation was featured in the February 1963 "Farm Journal". In 1967 he started as a hog buyer for Farmland Industries. He operated hog buying stations in Oakland, NE and then in Fredricksburg. He retired in 1981 continuing to live in Fredericksburg and spending winters in Arizona. He was a member of St. Frederick's Catholic Church at Fredericksburg. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and farming. He especially liked the time he spent with hog farmers. Survivors are his son, Gerald Severin, Collierville, TN; sisters, Jean Koelzer, Seneca, KS; Anna Marie Gruetze, Seneca, KS; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Urban, Bernard, Fr. Francis, Henry and James Severin; and a sister, Geneva Lauer. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Frederick's Cathoic Church, Fredericksburg, IA. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.
