Description	:	Christian G. Frederick Becker was born in Pomerania, Germany on January 26, 1834. He moved to Berlin, where he learned the shoemaking trade. His first wife died, leaving him a daughter, Johanne Christine Dorothea, born April 6, 1869. He then married Sophia Klingenberg, and they came to Chicago where he soon owned and operated a shoe-making factory. He moved to Berlin, where he learned the shoemaking trade. His first wife died, leaving him a daughter, Johanne Christine Dorothea, born April 6, 1869. He then married Sophia Klingenberg, and they came to Chicago where he soon owned and operated a shoe-making factory. She was born in Bublitz, Prussia, August 10, 1854 she later moved to Berlin, and again to Chicago in 1881. On April 3, 1883 the family left Chicago with the Evangelical Church group and arrived in North Dakota on April 6, 1883 on the bare prairies at the site of what was to become New Salem. Before leaving Chicago Fred had sold his shoemaking business (a few of the little square wooden pegs used for shoe nails in those days have been found) and bought a car-load of lumber with which to build a house, barn and granary in North Dakota. Until the house was erected on the banks of the Sweetbriar Creek on the homestead seven miles north of the New Salem site they lived for a while in a box car, then perhaps in a dug-out on the homestead. The first year or two he had only one horse and since there were no horses to be bought at that time Fred hitched a steer with the horse to break the sod. Being there was plenty of work to do; the first few years he took advantage of the piles of dirt dug up by gophers by planting the potatoes in them. It worked! One Spring in March, when a store had been established in New Salem, Fred Sr. walked to town for some groceries, and about half-way home a sudden blizzard struck. Noting the direction from which the wind hit his face he kept walking thinking he was going in the right direction. Due no doubt to changing wind direction he found himself by night-fall at the rock formation known as "old Jerusalem," four or five miles west-southwest of home. There he stayed in a small sort of cave. The little dog he had along kept barking and tugging at him all night, keeping him awake and thus undoubtedly saving his life, by keeping him from freezing. In the morning the weather was clear, and he walked home. Fred was a talented horticulturist, and soon had quite a variety of trees grouping in an arbor, like a beautiful mini-botanical garden on the Sweetbriar. ON this too time has taken its toll. Daughter Dorothea was married to August Katzke. They lived in the Sweetbriar area. To Fred and Therese three children were born in North Dakota: Fred C. (Carl Christian Max Friedrich) July 23, 1889; George (Heinrich Friedrich Georg) December 17, 1891; and Grace (Theresa Grace Conradine) May 25, 1893. Grace was married to Edward Tellmann, and they established a dairy farm on the Tellmann Homestead. C.F. G. Becker became a naturalized citizen of the U.S.A. on March 24, 1890. Earlier going by his name Christian; later by his second name Johannas (someone along the line apparently miss-read the difficult Germany script "J" as "G," hence the sometimes designation "C.G. F. Becker"); he was latterly known as Fred. He died on the farm on September 2, 1906 at age 71. Therese continued to live on the farm until 1915, when illness compelled her to move to New Salem. She became bed-fast about Thanksgiving, and spent the final months of her life with daughter Grace Tellmann, where she died of cancer on January 7, 1916 at age 61. Son Fred C continued on the farm.
