He arrived in New Salem, North Dakota, in April, 1886. Friedrich Wohler was born at Bruchhausen, Hannover, Germany, on January 4, in 1845. He left Germany at the age of 20, and settled in the Chicago area. He worked in a friend's butcher shop at first and later for the railroad. On April 6, 1872, he married it Dora Albers in Tinley Park, Illinois. Dora was also a native of Hannover, Germany. She was born June 22, 1849, in Hoja. She left Germany in 1870 to join her brother, John, in Iowa and later joined a cousin, John D. Albers, in Chicago. The Woehler's five children were born in Tinley Park; Heinrich in 1873, Rebecca in 1874, John in 1878, Edward in 1880 (died in 1881), and Mary in 1882. Both of Dora's brothers (John and Henry) settled with their families in Illinois. Her parents (H. H. Sr. and Rebecca) and her younger sister, Mary, came from Germany in the early 1880s; they made their home with the Woehlers. Mrs. H. H. (Rebecca) Albers died in 1883 in Tinley Park. After John D. Albers returned from the Dakota Territory in the early 1880s, he encouraged his friends and relatives in Illinois to claim Homesteads. The Fritz Woehler family decided they too would take advantage of the opportunities in the West. Fritz Woehler arrived in New Salem in April of 1886. He came within emigrant car loaded with precut lumber for the house (cost $156), a team of horses, a wagon, livestock, farm tools, seed for the first year's crop, and all the household belongings. Two weeks later his family arrived, his wife, Doris, her father, H. H. Albers, and the children: Henry 13, Rebecca 12, John eight, and Mary four. The family stayed with the John D. Albers while their house was being erected. Theirs was the first frame house in the area. The early years on the Homestead were difficult, at best. Blizzards, drought, prairie fires, and hailstorms wiped out crops and made a meager existence near impossible. When crops didn't fail, the wheat market brought only $.75 per bushel. To help supplement the family income, John and Henry picked Buffalo bones and sold them in New Salem for eight dollars per ton. Fritz also worked for the railroad in Montana. He was gone 3 to 4 months at a time. After planting a crop he would leave and then return home for the harvest. When he was able to return home he would walk from New Salem (16 miles). Travel was rare, and often winter months would pass without seeing anyone outside of the family. Why do they stay? The Woehler family would have gladly returned to Illinois if only they could have, but they invested everything they owned in their Homestead venture. So they stuck it out because they had to and better times did come. In 1888 there was an Indian uprising. Sitting Bull was on a rampage. The family pack themselves into a wagon and fled to Fort Lincoln for safety. Before they left, they poured out some wine they were making. They did not want to add firewater to the rampage. Before they got to Mandan, they were informed the scare was over. They returned home, only to find their flock of geese dead. They blamed the Indians for the senseless killing. Doris felt she must at least salvage the feathers, so the geese were gathered up and she began to pluck them. To the family's (and the geese) surprise, they were not dead but only passed out after indulging in the poured out wine. Friedrich Woehler was instrumental in organizing the first formal congregation at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hannover in 1889. He was also listed as a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church in Tinley Park, Illinois, in 1872. Friedrich Woehler died July 15, 1903. His death was the result of a spring time plowing accident with a team of skittish horses Doris remained on the Homestead with the help of her sons. Both sons, Henry and John, claim homesteads in the vicinity once they were of age. She made her home with her sons, John, and his family on the original Homestead until her death January 27, 1934. Henry died in 1905 at age 32. Rebecca married Frank Henke in 1896. She died at child birth of twins in 1897, and was the first to be buried at St. Peter's Cemetery. Her infant twins son, Fred, died the same year. Her twin daughter, Rebecca, was raised by Fritz and Doris Woehler. Mary married Henry Sorensen in 1905. They lived in the Hannover area, and later in Hazen. They had two children: Leone, who married Art Benjamin, and Leroy, who married Margie Birkeland. Both are deceased. Mary died in 1959. (Typo - Henry Sorenson) John married Elsa Gotze June 25, 1913, at Hannover, North Dakota. Elsa was born December 19, 1892, in Leipzeg, Germany. She came to the United States in 1913. John and Elsa had four daughters. Ruth was born in 1914. She married C. Krogstad, lived in Wisconsin, and died in 1968. Dorothy was born in 1916. She married Sigurd Lovold, and they live in Center. Lucy was born in 1918. She married Roy Matteson and lives in Minot. Marion was born in 1923. She married Melvin Skager and lives in Mandan. They also had an adopted daughter, Rose Zemple, who was born in 1905. She married Ben Olson, lived in Almont, and died in 1943. John Woehler lived on the family Homestead from the age of eight, in 1886, until 1941, when he retired and moved to Wisconsin. He is best remembered for his good heartedness, friendly manner, and his storytelling. He died December 13, 1967, and Elsa died December 9, 1971.
