He was born on July 31, 1928, in Ronan, to Fredrick and Hellen Houle. He graduated from Ronan High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps that same year. TUCSON, Ariz. -- Fredrick Joseph Houle, Jr., 75, of Ronan, died of natural causes here on Feb. 12, 2004. He was born on July 31, 1928, in Ronan, to Fredrick and Hellen Houle. He graduated from Ronan High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps that same year. He served during the Korean conflict and the Vietnam war, and retired with the rank of Major in 1967. In 1950 he married Glenna B. Reed and they had five children. After military retirement, he returned to the Flathead Reservation. He has served on the board of directors of Salish Kootenai College, S&K Electronics, Salish Kootenai Housing Authority, Mission Mountain Country Club, and Mission Valley Power, and he remained politically active. He also served as Executive Secretary of the Tribes for 15 years. He married Myrna Smith in 1994 and gained four stepchildren. Fred and Myrna enjoyed retirement living by spending time together in their home in Ronan, the shores of Blue Bay on Flathead Lake and being snowbirds in Yuma, Ariz. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and golf. He is survived by his wife, Myrna; his sisters and their spouses, Lois Dupuis, Allene Cole (John), June Dullaghan, Lora Cole (Jim), Rose Kugler (Ward); his brother, Morris Robert Houle; his five children and their spouses, Theresa Ann Rider, Sally Lynn (Dan) Fend, Joseph Glen (Mary) Houle, Rhoda Lee Folkers, and Thomas Andrew (Donna) Houle; four stepchildren and their spouses, Caralee Lee (Mark), Kelly Crippen (Rob), Connie Starkel, Victor John Starkel II (Paytra); as well as 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 20 at Glacier View Christian School followed by military graveside honors at Mountain View Cemetery in Ronan.
