Halbfass, 58, who had served as engineer of Muscatine county almost continuously since 1915 and who had been a resident here for 34 years, died at Bellevue hospital at 6 o'clock this morning after a lingering illness. His home was at 1115 Sycamore Street. Mr. Halbfass for many years was active in state engineering organizations and for nearly a year was in the employ of the Iowa Highway commission. He was the oldest Muscatine county official in length of service and was fifth in length of service as a highway engineer in Iowa as a result of his record established in Muscatine, county. Despite his failing health, Mr. Halfass continued in charge of the county engineering duties until just a few weeks prior to his death. The son of Fred Halbfass and Herny Otto Halbfass, he was born at La Porte city, Ia., on Aug. 26, 1885, and was graduated from the La Porte City high school in the class of 1905. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Iowa in 1909 and his degree in Civil Engineering in 1914. During the year of 1909-1910 he was employed as assistant city engineer at Grinnell before coming to Muscatine where he was on the staff of the city engineer. In the years 1913-1915 he was employed by the Central States Engineering company before accepting his first appointment as Muscatine county engineer in 1915. Mr. Halbfass continued in this position until his death with the exception of an 11-month period in 1929, when he was in charge of primary road maintenance jurisdiction in Muscatine, Johnson and Iowa counties as divisional maintenance engineer for the Iowa Highway commission. Mr. Halbfass was in charge of the First Iowa state and U. S. employment service established in Muscatine in 1933. He was a contributor to professional journals and societies, was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Builders association, the American Road Builders association, the Iowa Engineering society, the Iowa Officers association and was secretary of the fifth district during the years from 1933 to 1937. He was a member of the Rotary club during the years 1926 to 1929, of the Muscatine Elks lodge, the "33" club and of Iowa lodge 2 A. F. and A. M. Mr. Halbfass was also active in musical circles, in the University of Iowa band for four years, the Grinnell orchestra for one year and of the Muscatine band for 10 years. Mr. Halbfass married Maurine Moore at St. Louis, Mo. on May 30, 1937 and she survives with a son by a former marriage, Lowell Paul Halbfass, of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Arno C. Halbfass of Shreveport, La. and Herbert Halbfass of La Porte City, Ia. and a sister, Mrs. Mrs. Roger Bremer of La Porte City. Also surviving are two step daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Hoefflin of East Moline, Ill. and Mrs. Burnett Sutter, of Columbus, Ind. and several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Fairbanks home for funerals and will remain there for rites at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. M. L. Van Wagenen of the First Congregational church will be in charge. A Masonic service will also be held at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
