" Fred Gavette, who has lived for seven years in Frankfort, South Dakota, has returned to town (Wallingford) with his family, deciding to reside here. Gavette sold out his property here and went to South Dakota with the intention of farming on a large scale. He purchased a section of 480 acres and started to raise various crops. He had 250 acres sown to wheat, barley, oats and corn. To this he added 20 head of cattle, 8 horses, 3 colts, a pony, 50 pigs and 60 chickens. For 7 years he carried on this immense farm single handed except for an extra man at harvest time. He says he was able to do this because of the great machines which are used in the western states. For instance a harrow used in these parts is about 6 ft. Wide and out there it is 24 feet, and all other tools in the same ratio. Driving 6 horses abreast, he was able to do work in one day which would take a man here a week. He was directly on the railroad but the nearest neighbor was about a half mile away. His oldest son, Robert, rode a pony to the nearest school, 2 miles away. A brother, Dwight, also a former Wallingford man, and another brother, Ralph are both located in the same locality. Dwight Gavette has a section of 640 acres and Ralph takes care of 720 acres. Fred Gavette filed a claim farther west, and had he remained in Dakota would likely have relocated upon his government claim later. To secure a claim out there, a man must file, and if inside of fourteen months, he returns to live upon it, he may purchase it from the government for 50 cents an acre. All these joys were relinquished by Mr. Gavette, and he has decided in the good old town of Wallingdord. He is home on Center st. At the present." My aim in posting this is that since none of us knew him personally, this description is of a man who had to have been very strong and hard working. The existence out there, according to Gram, was a very rough one. She said she did not see another woman for 4 months each winter. My mother Marion, Aunt Dot and Uncle Randy were all born in South Dakota.
