She was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Delta, the daughter of Alex and Dora Bruns Taylor. Freeda graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1933 and furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. She was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Delta, the daughter of Alex and Dora Bruns Taylor. Freeda graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1933 and furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. She taught rural school in Keokuk County for a few years. On April 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Ernest Blom at Delta. Together they farmed in Keokuk County, and in 1941, moved to Mahaska County, where they continued to farm and raise their family. In 1979, Ernest and Freeda moved into Oskaloosa; however, they continued to stay active on the farm for many years. Freeda also enjoyed working as a sales representative for Avon. Early on, she was a very active member of the Coal Creek Church as the church piano player, teaching Sunday school and directing the children's choir. She was also a member of the Ideal neighborhood club. Later, Freeda transferred her church membership to the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, where she was very active, serving as a Sunday school teacher, director of the children's choir, played the piano for many years, Stephen's Ministry, U.M.W. and was once "queen of the Church Bazaar."On June 18, 1987, Ernest died. Freeda continued to be active in retirement, especially with Chapter IO, P.E.O., T.T.T., Garfield Club, Oskaloosa Women's Club, Farm Bureau Women, Mahaska Hospital auxiliary and superintendent of the "flower division" at the Southern Iowa Fair. She was also active in the Democratic Party and had been an Election Day poll worker for many years. She tended to be the "taxi driver" for many of her friends and delighted in spending time with her family and sharing her creativity and food with everyone.Her family includes a daughter, Phyllis Childers (Charles) Perdue of Des Moines; two sons, Rex (Lorraine) Blom and Lyle (Eileen) Blom, all of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren, Dave (Barb) Childers, Debbie Garber, Mark (Pam) Blom, Michelle (Brent) Vande Wall, Mitch (Sara) Blom, Jack Blom, Jay (Michelle) Blom and Janelle (Reg) Randau; 16 great-grandchildren, Nicole (Brent) Potter, Heather Garber, Josh (Emily) Childers, Julie Childers, Ryan and Austin Blom, Lindsey, Nathan and Katie Vande Wall, Cameron, Hanna and Emily Blom, Sandra and Aaron Blom and Zac and Lexi Randau; and four great-great-grandchildren, Sydney and Ty Potter and Wyatt and Payton Baker.Besides her husband, Freeda was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in- law, Don Childers; a brother in infancy, John Raymond Taylor; and two sisters, Ruth Gibbons and Ruby Lippard. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church, Oskaloosa, with Revs. David Childers and Robert Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Sunday at the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present from 2-4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
