Freeman Burleigh U.E., in Jessup's Loyal Rangers, escaped to Canada with Wm. Rogers and Matthis Rose, Jr. and arrived in Quebec 4 Sept 1781, along with a few others including Wm. Rogers' seven month pregnant wife and four children under the age of ten, and Matthias's brother David. The men had been taken prisoners at the Battle of Freeman's farm, been released under the terms of surrender, had been arrested twice more for assisting scouts and warned a fourth arrest was coming. They escaped through the woods and up Lake George and Champlain to the British post at St. Jean. Freeman was 23 years old, 5 foot 8 inches tall and had been in the service 1 year and 2 months on the muster roll of Jessup's Rangers, Jan 1, 1783. This muster roll is found in the Rolls of the Provincial Corps, Canadian Command, American Revolutionary Period, at Riviere du Chene, Quebec and are found in the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office, London, England. This is a primary source proof that Freeman Burleigh was loyal and a United Empire Loyalist. Freeman Burleigh settled in Ernestown along with other Jessup Rangers and families including the family of John Wees, Sr. and his wife, Mary Rees. The men drew lots from a hat for the location of their free land grant. Freeman married Susanna Wees, John's eldest daughter and they had 10 children all of whom applied for land as a son/daughter of a Loyalist. They were not loyalist themselves, but their father, Freeman Burleigh, and their grandfather, John Wees, Sr. were also loyal. They all have Orders in Council where they petioned for their land. Each was entitled to 200 acres, both sons and daughters, because their father was a Loyalist.
