Freida Elizabeth Frazier was born in Mobridge, June 6, 1913, the fourth daughter to Pete and Josephine (Boutiette) Frazier. Read More	Freida Schuh, of Selby and formerly of Java, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby. She was 94 years old. Freida Elizabeth Frazier was born in Mobridge, June 6, 1913, the fourth daughter to Pete and Josephine (Boutiette) Frazier. She attended grade and high school in Mobridge graduating with the class of 1931. During her high school days, she was active in sports and music. She attended Northern State Teachers' College in Aberdeen, graduating in the spring of 1932 from a one-year course, which certified her to teach in any rural school in South Dakota. She had borrowed money from the late A.H. Brown of Mobridge for her education, keeping careful account of her expenditures and at the end of the term she owed $196.00. She had worked as a housemaid to earn her board and room. She began teaching in Corson County, at the Landeau School, north of Trail City. In the fall of 1934 she came to the Java area to teach in Adams School District, northeast of Java. During summers, she attended college and took correspondence courses to further her education, and eventually she earned her Bachelors of Science degree. She retired in 1976 after teaching a total of 40 years. Twenty of these years were in the Java Public School. She met Ellsworth Schuh in 1937 at a barn dance where he was playing the accordion. They were married in Timber Lake, on June 21, 1939. They lived with his parents the first years of their marriage, then on rented farms near Java. In 1955 they purchased a farm five miles east of Java. Due to Ellsworth's declining health and after much thought and deliberation, they moved into Java in the fall of 1982 and bought a home. Ellsworth died September 29, 1984. Freida continued to live there where she was active in church and community organizations. She had been confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1955 where she sang with the choir and also served as choir director for 16 years. She was a dedicated member of Lutheran Church women, serving in various offices including that of president of WELCA and also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was president of Missouri River Branch of Lutheran Brotherhood for four years. She was a charter member and officer of Java Arts and Education Council, and Java Senior Citizens. She took an active part in organizing Java's celebration of the South Dakota Centennial in 1989, and was chairman of a very successful Arts in the Park. As she grew older, Freida was not able to do a lot of physical work, but she still did lots of organizing and calling, from her home. Freida and Ellsworth never had children of their own, but they had many nieces and nephews who were very dear to them. Freida also had her many former students whom she enjoyed watching grow to adults. Freida is survived by many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Loretta (Cornelius) Schnaible and sons of Java. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Edward Frazier and George Patrick who died in infancy. Funeral services for Freida were Wednesday April 2 (today) at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Java with the Rev. Dennis Fonkert officiating. Burial was at Java Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Casketbearers were George Frazier, Gerald Walther, Bob Miller, James Schnaible, Patrick Schnaible and Tom Schnaible.
