What was probably the saddest and shocking accident that has ever happened in Teton county occurred Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, near the Barrett crossing on Deep creek, some twenty-five miles west of Choteau, when Friend Zimmerman, aged 24, son of John Zimmerman and wife, pioneer of the county, was shot and instantly killed as result of an accidental discharge of a 22 caliber target rifle at the hands of Miss Mabel Zimmerman, a sister of the victim. A party of young people from Fairfield were spending an outing at Deep creek canyon, and on the morning of the tragedy, just before breaking camp to start for home, it was proposed by Friend, who had been even more than usually cheerful throughout the trip and a leader in the pastimes of the party, that a few shells he had left in his pocket be used up. He went a few steps forward and was in the act of stooping to pick up a discarded tin can to be used as a target. As he did so his sister picked up the gun, which had not been fired. In a flash the rifle exploded, and Friend fell forward. It required a moment for the members of the party to realize the awful truth, but a telephone message was sent almost immediately from a neighboring ranch house to Choteau for a physician, in the hope that Friend was only unconscious. It was soon realized, however, that Friend was dead, and it is believed death was instantaneous, being indicated by the fact that the body never stirred after falling, and the fact that the bullet entered at the base of the skull behind, and pierced the brain. The condition of the sister at the time of the accident was most pitiable, and has remained such as to cause much anxiety to her family and friends. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church. Rev. W.W. Van Orsdel, a friend and neighbor of the parents in their old home in Pennsylvania, and later of the family here in Montana, delivered the funeral address. No more profoud sorrow has been caused by any death in the community. This was evidenced by the large concourse at the funeral services. The deceased was one of the most highly esteemed young men of the community and of much more than average attainments, being a graduate of Teton High School and a member of various musical organizations. He was by nature, as by name, friendly. He accepted life's responsibilities cheerfully as they came, and discharged them faithfully. And this means his life was a success. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.
