She was born Gail Clare Wright on March 24, 1921, in Palmer. She grew up there, graduating from Palmer High School in 1939. She was the only daughter of Oliver and Inez (Jemison) Wright. After attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she majored in music, Gail moved with her parents to Bremerton, Wash., early during World War II. On Nov. 21, 1943, she married Claude Scott, her high school sweetheart, in Tacoma, Wash. Shortly after their marriage, they returned to Nebraska — first to Wahoo and Auburn, then to Lincoln, where they lived for 36 years before retiring to Aurora in 1988. Gail and Claude had two daughters — Sandra in 1944 and Lois in 1948. An accomplished pianist, Gail also enjoyed making silver jewelry, using gemstones that Claude had tumbled and polished. Friends and family also remember her as a devoted caregiver for her daughters, her mother and, in later years, her husband. After Claude’s death in 2004, she served as a supportive resource for other recent widows in the community. A self-described “tough old broad,” she went through life’s challenges with resilience and humor — including the Great Depression, World War II, three major financial crises, knee replacement, a broken ankle, a broken leg, metastatic kidney cancer, and the loss of her husband of 60 years, who until his death still called her a “cute little gray-haired lady.” Gail is survived by her daughters, Sandra Scott of Lincoln and Lois Leach and son-in-law, Nile Leach, of Grand Junction, Colo.; her granddaughter, Alyson Platt, and grandson-in-law, Lee Platt; and three great-grandchildren, Deklan, Lorelei and Camille Platt, all of Grand Junction.
