Description	:	Gala May Helfrich, 69, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at her home in Topeka, after a battle with lung cancer. She was born May 14, 1939, in Las Animas, Colo., to Juanita and William F. Frazee. She earned a bachelor's degree in music and business education from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., where she was the lead trombonist for the Adams State Top of the Nation Band. Her professional career included teaching music at Coolidge elementary, middle and high schools from 1962 to 1965 and at Syracuse Elementary School from 1973 to 1983. She was born May 14, 1939, in Las Animas, Colo., to Juanita and William F. Frazee. She earned a bachelor's degree in music and business education from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., where she was the lead trombonist for the Adams State Top of the Nation Band. Her professional career included teaching music at Coolidge elementary, middle and high schools from 1962 to 1965 and at Syracuse Elementary School from 1973 to 1983. She was an active member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Syracuse, serving as organist and choir director for many years. On Aug. 21, 1965, she married John L. "Jack" Helfrich in Syracuse. He died June 24, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Leo, Clyde and Francis Frazee. Rosary was at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Mass and memorial service was at the church, followed by an inurnment ceremony at Syracuse Cemetery in Hamilton County. Garden City Telegram 7/15/08
