Description	:	Galen William Schoening, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, Nebraska. Galen, was born December 5, 1930 to Henry R. and Zella (Ostrander) Schoening at what was known as "Schoening Store" west and south of Belgrade, Nebraska. Galen attended School at Belgrade, Nebraska through the 11th Grade. In June of 1947, the family moved to Albion, Nebraska, where they ran a new & used furniture store. Read More	Galen William Schoening, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, Nebraska. Galen, was born December 5, 1930 to Henry R. and Zella (Ostrander) Schoening at what was known as "Schoening Store" west and south of Belgrade, Nebraska. Galen attended School at Belgrade, Nebraska through the 11th Grade. In June of 1947, the family moved to Albion, Nebraska, where they ran a new & used furniture store. They also had a roller skating rink. Galen then graduated from Albion (NE.) High School in 1948. Galen entered the United States Air force on October 10, 1950 serving in the USA and 2.5 years in England until being honorably discharged on October 9, 1954. After returning to Albion, Nebraska he helped with the furniture store and skating rink and also was a self-employed cabinet maker. In January of 1957, he started working at the Albion (NE.) Post Office as a city carrier, changed to a clerk and then advanced to assistant postmaster and postmaster. On September 19, 1962, Galen was united in marriage to Carolyn Jane Case at Yankton, South Dakota. They made their home in Albion, Nebraska. Galen continued working for the post office for thirty-one plus years, retiring on Sept. 30, 1988. Galen served as a Veterans Club Treasurer, Assistant Scout Master, the Albion (NE.) School Board and on the Selective Service Board until 1996. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #162, Albion, Nebraska and had an amateur radio license. Galen enjoyed hunting and fishing with his wife and family and watching his grandchildren with their various activities. He also liked watching Boone Central and Nebraska Cornhusker sports. Galen is survived by: wife, Carolyn Jane Schoening of Central City, Nebraska; sons, Dan (Rose) Schoening of Sidney, Nebraska and Jim (Sue) Schoening of Columbus, Nebraska; grandchildren, Bryan, Tyler, Jenna and Morgan; great-grandchild, Audrey; brother, Neal Schoening of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-laws: Bud Kennedy and Norman Elstermeier, both of Grand Island, Nebraska and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: parents; sisters: Diann Elstermeier and Bernita Kennedy and sister-in-law: Catherine Schoening. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion, Nebraska with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #162 and VFW Post #736.
