Read More	TWENTYNINE PALMS — The city lost a pioneering business owner when Garland Nealy “Bud” Ford Jr. died surrounded by family members at his home Thursday, Feb. 15. Ford, who was born Oct. 11, 1925, in El Dorado, Arkansas, moved his family to Twentynine Palms in 1957 to help his parents, Malsie Southall Ford and Garland Nealy Ford, operate the Chuckwagon Cafe on Twentynine Palms Highway. He was a member of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church and often presided over the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. He was active in the Rotary Club, was a Paul Harris Fellow and often hosted Rotary-sponsored exchange students. He was a charter member of the Twentynine Palms Elks Lodge. In 1963 he opened Ford’s Restaurant on Adobe Road and Twentynine Palms Highway, on the corner that now houses the Denny’s Restaurant. The restaurant was described as a combination 24-hour coffee shop, banquet room and cocktail lounge. The Oasis Room in the restaurant proved to be so popular it had to be enlarged. He moved to Rawlins, Wyoming, to lead an active retired life after selling the restaurant in 1977. Health concerns brought him back to Twentynine Palms in 2016. Ford served in the United States Marines during World War II, working as a bomb loader in the Pacific Theater. He and wife Kathleen “Katinka” were married on April 25, 1947. They had five children together, Frances, James (known as Fred) Jay, Garland III and Mary Alice.
