Description	:	Garland Samuel Grabill was born to Samuel Washington & Birdie Estella (Thrailkill) Grabill in their log cabin home on their farm, a fourth generation of Grabills on the farm near Pawnee, Missouri. His siblings included: Opal Letitia (Grabill) Kelly of Ireland; Oregon Grabill Hobbs; Margie (Grabill) Lark; Hazel (Grabill) Evans; Mary Belle-died in infancy;and his brother Leland Keith Grabill. Garland's boyhood was spent helping his father and mother on the farm with the crops and tending to livestock. Garland received his education, played basketball, and graduated from Eagleville High School in 1928. He continued to work on the farm and with other local farmers, namely Uriah Scott Holloway. After high school, Garland became head of the family at age 23, with the sudden death of his father. On 7 October 1933, Garland married Doris Helen Holloway, daughter of Scott and Ethel (York) Holloway at Leon, Iowa, and brought her to live in the family home. To this union 8 children were born: Eldon "Keith", Gary "Rex", Alvin Leroy, Helen Galene, Barbara Ann, Samuel Scott, Larry Lynn, and Nancy Louise. In the hard times of the 1930's, in addition to farming, Garland did everything he honestly could to earn money, including hunting and trapping. Garland had bought a farm about 3 miles north of the "home place" in Missouri but lost that in the Depression. With determination, in 1937, Garland moved his family to a farm which he bought near Marne, Iowa. Hard times lingered and this farm was also lost. Then the family moved to a farm north of Harlan, Iowa, on Junior Holloway's place, closer to where Doris's family had recently moved. Garland rented this ground and contracted to grow seed corn for Earl May's Hybrid Seed Corn Company. This endeavor was prosperous and Garland bought a farm north of Fiscus, Iowa in 1942. They didn't move onto this farm until February 9, 1944. There was no electricity on the farm at this time. Garland sold Conkey Feeds and later Hubbard Feed for livestock in addition to growing corn, oats, soybeans, alfalfa, and raising cattle, chickens, and hogs, and milking cows. Garland was a religious man of honesty, determination, integrity, humor, patience, humbleness, charity, kindness, and very loving. He never swore. He would tell his grandkids, "In this old world, you've got to be tough, real tough." He also passed out key chains in his feed business that said,"I'm okay, you're okay! God doesn't make junk!" Garland never locked his warehouse, but instead used the honor system. When customers needed feed, they could pick it up any time, just write it down so Garland could bill him. Garland was greatly sensitive to others' feelings and tried to help everyone. Garland had a sense of humor and loved a good ball game. He donated money for the lights on the baseball field at Fiscus; took all the kids in the neighborhood around in his pick-up on halloween; and was an Elder in the Jesus Christ Church of the Latter Day Saints. He lived his faith. Garland and Doris retired from the farm and moved into Audubon after he had a bad heart attack in the mid 1960's. Garland continued to sell Hubbard Feeds. He also found time for his hobby of woodworking and refinishing furniture. Oak was his favorite wood. Garland died at his home in Audubon, Iowa on 27 March 1985. His funeral was at the Methodist Church in Audubon, but the service given by the Elders of his Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. Garland was buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa. He was a good man, gone to his great reward.
