Garry was born Aug. 20, 1934, in rural Maskell, Neb., the son of Adelene Nelson and Chester Colbenson. He was raised, loved and adopted by his maternal grandparents, Marian (Nielsen) Nelson and Gehard Nelson. He attended grade school in Maskell and attended high school in Ponca. In March 1952, he left school to join the U.S. Marines and served for two years. He saw action in Korea. He was always so proud to have been a Marine. In 2006, in the Veteran's Day program at Ponca High School, he received his high school diploma. In July 1952, he married Rose Stark, the mother of his three children. That marriage ended in divorce in the early 1970s. For many of his earlier years, he worked in packing houses in Sioux City, Kansas, Texas, Omaha and Michigan. It was in Michigan where he met and married Gloria. Garry enjoyed his life to the fullest. He enjoyed time with his family, watching TV and working in his yard, until moving into Pioneer Square Apartments in 2004 due to declining health. Garry had three spots to go every morning to have coffee with friends and family. He never let his long and courageous fight with cancer over the last seven years take away his humor and teasing others. Cook's Country Store will never be the same to those who went there and had coffee when he was there. In 1990, Garry met Bill W., founder of AA, and it changed his life from then on. All during his illness he never complained of not feeling well, and when asked how he was, his usual response was, "I feel pretty good today." He tried to make people think he was a tough guy but inside he had a soft and big heart. Survivors include his devoted and loving wife, a son and his wife, a daughter, three sisters, a brother, three half brothers, three half sisters, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law, Gloria's three children and families; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a huge number of nieces and nephews and extended families. Last of all, his faithful dog, Teddy, who watched over him. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen Marie; his mother, father and grandparents; brothers, Don Nelson, Gordon and his wife, Lenora Nelson, Ronald Nelson and Gaylord and his wife, Molly Nelson; a half brother, Clyde Bostwick; a sister, Ramona Kamrath; a sister-in-law, Nancy Bostwick; brothers-in-law, Ray Waters, Ray Rahn and Bob Bottorff; and a son-in-law, Dale "Con" Camerer. Donations may be made to Hospice of Siouxland, the June Nylen Cancer Center or the Branch County Humane Society in Quincy, Mich. Sioux City Journal online, July 16, 2007.
