He was born February 17, 1945 in Beatrice and was confirmed at the American Lutheran Church of Adams in April 1960. He graduated from Adams High School in 1963. Read More	Gary A. Behrens, 72, of Sterling died unexpectedly at his home on the morning of Thursday, October 26, 2017. He was born February 17, 1945 in Beatrice and was confirmed at the American Lutheran Church of Adams in April 1960. He graduated from Adams High School in 1963. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling and had served on the church council. He had also been a member of the Sterling Cemetery Board and Harm Sangen Post 140 of the American Legion of Sterling. He married Doris Epley on August 22, 1965 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2015. The marriage was blessed with four children. He served during the Vietnam Conflict from April 1966 until he was honorably discharged in April of 1972. In 1977, he became the owner of Behrens APCO in Sterling until September of 1996. After selling Behrens APCO, Gary continued to tinker on automobiles in his garage, performed CDL examinations, and was employed at several local businesses, including the St. Mary's Co-op, Brinkman Brothers, and TOPPS. During his retirement he was a bus driver for the Sterling Public Schools and enjoyed all 'his' kids. Survivors include his wife, Doris of Sterling; one daughter, Jodi (Steve) Krause of Adams; three sons, Jason (Kristi) Behrens of Gretna and Jeremy (Erin) Behrens of Gretna and John (Wendy) Behrens of Grand Island; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, Dennis (Patti) Behrens of Beatrice; three sisters-in-law, Darlene Schuster and Marilyn Van Groningen both of Sterling and Janet (Ronald) Lubben of Lincoln; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Shirley (Brinkman) Behrens; one brother, Galen Behrens; three brothers-in-law, Marvin Hestermann, Cobb Van Groningen and Dave Schuster; sister-in-law, Janice Hestermann. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 30, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery of Sterling. A family prayer service will be held 10:45 A.M. on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the family’s choice with Shannon and Erma Hazen in charge. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Harm Sangen Post #140 of Sterling and the Nebraska National Guard. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling on Saturday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Sunday from 10:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and at the church one hour preceding the services on Monday.
