Description	:	Gary A. Smoak, 71, died Friday, December 31, 2010. Dr. Smoak was born in Orangeburg, SC, the only child of the late W. Gary Smoak and Aileen R. Smoak. Dr. Smoak was a graduate of Furman University, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of South Carolina. Gary Smoak and Aileen R. Smoak. Dr. Smoak was a graduate of Furman University, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of South Carolina. In 2004, at age 65, he earned his Doctorate of Ministry degree at Erskine Theological Seminary. He had previously been the pastor at Maple Baptist Church in Conway, South Beltline Baptist Church in Columbia and was the associate pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Cayce. For approximately 25 years, Dr. Smoak provided many churches across the state with interims. When not involved in full-time pastoral work, Dr. Smoak served as the county administrator in Greenwood, Orangeburg, Anderson and Newberry counties in South Carolina and Monroe, NC. For 20 years, he was an active member of Rotary International, and in 1998, he served as the president of his local chapter in Monroe, NC. In the early 1990's, he was appointed by the Governor to the SC Solid Waste Advisory Council. Dr. Smoak served on the Board of Directors of the United Way in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties, and he also served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce while in Greenwood, Orangeburg and Anderson. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sylvia, daughters, Nancy Smoak, Janet Smoak Lawrence and Barbara Smoak and his only granddaughter, Taylor Lawrence, all of Columbia. Viewing and visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 3, 2011 at Riverland Hills Baptist Church with the family receiving friends after the service at the church. Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. in Bush River Memorial Gardens
