He was born in Harrisonburg on Feb. 22, 1956, and was the son of the late Willard F. and Ruth Sumpter Dovel. Mr. Dovel graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1974 and was an active member of the Muhlenberg Lutheran Church. He was owner of Shenandoah Valley Band Instruments and was a Classic Car Enthusiast. On May 24, 1980, he married, Martha Street, who also died on July 17, 2007, in the same accident. He is survived by his children, Julie Paul and husband, Allen of Virginia Beach; Eric Dovel and wife, Lorna of Keezletown, and Scott Dovel of Keezletown, two brothers, Tom Dovel and wife, Connie of Charlottesville, Warren Dovel and wife, Sharon of Penn Laird, three nieces and two nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church with Rev. Joseph Vought and Rev. David Nelson officiating. Mr. Dovel will be cremated at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg and a private burial will be at a later date. Without high school and college bands in practice, fewer musicians drop into Shen Valley Band, a downtown Harrisonburg instrument repair shop owned by Gary Dovel. A beach vacation was in order. Early Tuesday, friends say, three members of the Dovel family and a friend packed a van and took off for a rented seaside house. But two hours into the drive, another driver hit the Dovels head-on. A dump truck had swerved into their lane on U.S. 15 north of Interstate 64, said Sgt. Tom Cunningham, a spokesman with the Virginia State Police. Gary Dovel, 51, and his wife, Martha, 50, both Keezletown residents, were pronounced dead on the scene. Their 19-year-old son Scott and another passenger, a 17-year-old girl whose identity has not been released ( Brielle Nelson ), were both airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center. A U.Va. spokeswoman said Thursday that Scott was in serious condition. The girl, police said, had life-threatening injuries at the scene and was in critical condition. The Wreck The dump truck, Cunningham said, was driven by Jerome J. Booker Jr. He sustained no injuries in the crash. It was nearly 1:30 p.m. when Booker, a Palmyra resident, drove north on U.S. 15 east of Charlottesville in Louisa County. Police say he apparently swerved left to avoid a pickup truck preparing to make a turn at the intersection of West Green Springs Road. The 2005 Freightliner dump truck, which was empty at the time of the crash, struck the front of the Dovels' southbound 1994 GMC van, Cunningham said. Both vehicles came to rest at the intersection, closing both lanes for more than two hours. All four passengers in the van were wearing seat belts, Cunningham said. Booker was not. He was charged with reckless driving and failure to wear a seat belt. The investigation, Cunningham said, is ongoing. The Family On Wednesday, Shen Valley Band was open as normal. Friends say the business was started in the '50s by Gary Dovel's father, Willard. The family has deep roots in the Valley, said Mark Byerly, a family friend. "They loved it here," said Byerly, 48, of Harrisonburg. The Dovels loved the outdoors, too. Neighbors remember the family picking raspberries in the shadow of Massanutten and hiking the mountain's winding trails. Others remember Martha's waving to neighbors on their street in Keezletown, Longbow Road. Gary, neighbors say, loved to work on cars and had fixed up a classic Chevelle. "He just liked tinkering," said Rob Montague, 52, who lives next door. "He was good at fixing things." Maybe that's why he took over the family business, even though friends say Gary Dovel wasn't particularly musically inclined himself. Byerly said Dovel wanted to ensure the business stayed in the family, so he and Martha took over responsibilities at the shop. He says the two met at Madison College and have been married for at least 25 years. The Dovels had three children, Scott, Eric and Julie. Scott, friends say, is a graduate of Spotswood High School and planned to attend James Madison University, his mother's alma mater, in the fall. The unnamed girl, friends say, was also a student at Spotswood. The Dovels, friends say, have always been active in the school community and church. They are longtime members of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg. "The family has been here for generations," said the Rev. Joe Vought, one of the church's pastors. Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg will handle the funeral arrangements, but details haven't been announced. The Dovel's faith inspired them to help others, a neighbor Judith Lehman, 52, said. "They did so many things people will never know about," said neighbor Judith Lehman, 52. "They took care of other neighbors. They were just the kind of people you're so glad to meet in life."
