Burial was the Ash Hollow cemetery, Wright Funeral home being in charge. The deceased was born Gerald Elan Steward on October 26, 1941, the son of Gordon and Verna Steward of Lewellen. At the time of his death he was in the sixth grade of the Lewellen grade school. An unusually talented boy, he played the piano and held the position of first cornet player in the Lewellen school band. He holds the record with one other Lewellen boy in the school's entire history for being so young and in the sixth grade and yet being a member of the varsity basketball team so his prospects as an athlete were also great. For some time he had been a member of the Lewellen Boy Scout troop. Just nine days before his death he had become a member of the Lewellen Methodist church, being confirmed on Easter Sunday. Very active in the youth work of the church, he served as one of the key leaders in Junior Fellowship. Besides his parents he is survived by his brother, Jim; his grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Seibert of Lewellen; and many other relatives and friends.
