Gary was born January 8, 1957, in Fairview Park, Cleveland, Ohio, to Mae Overcash Smith and the late Gary Cooper Carpenter. Gary was educated in the Cleveland and Strongsville, Ohio, schools, furthering his education at West Rowan High School upon his return to North Carolina. Among Gary's greatest achievements in life was to appear on WEWS TV in Cleveland and WSLR radio in Akron, Ohio, playing bass guitar in his brother Bob's band for live broadcasts and recordings. With this band, Gary performed at the Sally West Music Hall in North Royalton, Ohio, and Lake Norman Music Hall in North Carolina. Over the years, he appeared in many towns and states, and he played numerous benefit performances raising money for those less fortunate than himself. Gary was baptized Methodist, but in his years of growing up he attended the First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Upon returning to North Carolina he worked with his brother, later becoming employed by Tar Heel Electric, remaining for nine years, becoming shop manager. Survivors other than his mother include his daughter, Tonya Carpenter, and one grandchild, Jessica Dula, both of Kannapolis; his brother, Bob Carpenter, and his grandmother, Nan Ketchie Overcash, both of the home; two nephews, Bobby Carpenter Jr. of Brunswick, Ohio, and Mark Carpenter of Strongsville, Ohio; two nieces, Dawn Yatsko of Hinckley, Ohio, and Sarah Carpenter of Cleveland, Ohio; a special uncle and aunt, Troy Jr. and Rachel Overcash of Medina, Ohio, who have shown their love for Gary in so many ways; and two special cousins, Maude Upright of Statesville and Suzie Weaver of Mt. Ulla, who gave him faithful love and support through many months of illness; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. A private graveside service was held at 2 p.m., October 30, 2003, at Centenary Methodist Church Cemetery with Dr. Doris Weddington and the Rev. Rick Felts officiating. During the time of Gary's death and memorial service the staff of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home provided the best of care and support, for which the family is deeply grateful. For the last seven months of Gary's life Hospice of Iredell County came to the aid of Gary and his family. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to those special members of the Hospice staff who cared for our Gary: Registered Nurses Debbie Lackey, Brenda Alford, Carol Heller, and Maurica Roemer, and Gary's CNA's, Sheila Parks, Colleen Mergard, Leslie Harris, Christie Mullins, and most of all Gary's beloved CNA Dawn Campbell whom he called "Star." A special thank you to Debbie Connelly, Hospice volunteer, and Dana Newton, SW, for their encouragement and support. To special friends, Bobby Gandy, Richard Bradshaw, Ed Riffle, Larry Hegler, Bill at Race City Appliances, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Beaver and Tina, thank you for being there for our Gary.
