Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Young Family on the envelope. Gary Owen Young, the son of Gerald Owen Young and Lela Simpson Wiley Young was born in Newton, Iowa. Gary was a graduate of Newton High School in 1971. Following graduation he moved to Denver, Colorado in 1972 and worked construction. In 1973, he moved to Bridal Veil, Oregon and worked as a Sawyer at the Bridal Veil Lumber Mill. He met Cheryl McNeel of Portland, Oregon and in July of 1975 they moved back to Newton and were married. In May of 1976 they were blessed with a son, Matthew Owen Young. Gary worked for the Maytag Company and then as a machinist for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, Iowa. In 1978, they moved back to Portland and he worked as a machinist for Camco Inc. In 1982 they were divorced and Matt and he returned to Newton later that year. Gary went to work for Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg, Iowa. Gary was a lifelong union man and supporter of the labor movement as many in his family were. He was a proud member of the UAW and AFSME and had served on many different committees in the union over the years. On January 30, 1999, Gary was united in marriage with Deborah J. Mogensen McCollough in Kellogg, Iowa. Together they pursued their love of travel every year, having visited all 48 continental United States and Canada. They also enjoyed time with their family and friends. In 2010, Gary was accepted in the nursing program at the Marshalltown Community College, where in 2012 he graduated with honor. After passing his nursing boards he worked as a nurse for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He greatly enjoyed working with the veterans until he retired. Gary loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to travel and he loved music, especially Roots music and the Blues. He had attended countless concerts over a 45-year span and saw many of the greats in Blues, Rock, Country and Roots music. He also enjoyed playing acoustic guitar and singing, with informal jam sessions with friends from all over for 30 years. Gary died on Friday, June 3, 2016, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, he was 63. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Young; brothers, Larry D. Young and Wayne Wiley; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
