Gary was born in Irwin, Nebraska, oldest son to Walter and Margaret (Morton) Galloway on July 9, 1942, and reborn in faith through baptism on August 10, 1980. Gary’s family lived and worked on the family ranch along the Niobrara River south of Kilgore, Nebraska. In approximately 1961, the family moved to Fremont, Nebraska for work. Gary and his father Walter both obtained jobs with Peter Kiewit Company in Omaha, Nebraska, where Gary operated a jackhammer for 6 months until his dislike for Omaha got the best of him. He then took a job working for Ray Timme Welding in Fremont, Nebraska, which was the beginning of Gary’s love of working with iron. Then came his second love. Gary began dating Mary Ranslem, and they were married July 3, 1962. The couple made their home in Fremont, and soon became the proud parents of their first daughter, Shelly. In 1964, Gary and Mary moved back to the Valentine area where Gary took a job as a ranch hand at the Arabia Ranch for a short period of time. Soon thereafter, he began work at Valentine Machine & Welding. Also in 1964, Gary and Mary brought home their youngest daughter, Tracy, making their family complete. Through sheer determination and absolute iron will, Gary was able to start his own business, putting up a new shop, which he opened as Galloway Welding in 1969. He worked hard, building the business and a rock solid reputation in the community as the best blacksmith in the country. Known for the quality of his work, he soon had more work than he knew what to do with, and while work was an important part of who he was, so was play, and that meant lots of hunting and fishing. Just as he had mastered the blacksmith trade, Gary had mastered the art of bow hunting, and all that went with it, from making his own bows, arrows, and bow strings, to making knives, all of which would forever be his greatest passions, shaping his character and the essence of his very being in a way that would make him a legend for miles around in the years to come. At any given time, friends and family of Gary’s would for no reason receive gifts of knives, tables, benches, lamps, tweezers, or grill accessories that he had made. Gary’s infectious smile often did the talking for him, leaving those on the receiving end wondering exactly what he was thinking. A known prankster to all his friends, Gary enjoyed pulling off practical jokes on unsuspecting friends and family, anything for a good laugh, and of course a good story to tell later, resulting in a wealth of “Gary” stories. He had a huge heart, and his kindness and generosity are known far and wide, as he was always eager to lend a helping hand, no matter what the job. Often in the winter, he would take his tractor in town to blade driveways, or scoop walks for those who weren’t able to do so themselves. His soft spot for kids of friends and family came out in all of the little things he did, from handing out candy, pop, 22 shells, bows, fireworks and many other things too numerous to tell. Not only was Gary generous to the people around him, but he gave back to the Valentine community in numerous ways, from his donations to the rifle range; to making the heart at the top of water tower hill; mowing the softball fields; making the flag pole at the senior center; and making knives to be donated to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Circle “C” in Cody, and many other good causes. Gary will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. He will always be remembered as an extremely talented and gifted man who shared part of himself with everyone he gave a homemade item to, the particular favorite of everyone being one of his knives. Survivors include wife Mary of 52 years; daughter Shelly Galloway-Reichert (Tim); daughter Tracy Boyles (David); sister Yvonne Gothard (Jack); brothers Rick Galloway (Ann); August Galloway (Deb); Keven Galloway (Cindy); grandchildren Geoff Engles (Leslie); Travis Galloway; Jessica Hottell (Jason); Thomas Arnold; great grandchildren Paige Engles; Natalie Engles; Aden Galloway; Axton Galloway; Austin Weiss. He was preceded in death by both parents, Walter & Margaret Galloway & infant sister Connie.
