Mr. Goodson was born in Canton, N.C., February 12, 1931, a son of the late Rubin Lee and Zonie Hawkins Goodson. He graduated Bethel School in Canton, N.C., and the U.S. Forestry School. Read More	Gay Clinton Goodson Sr., 75, husband of Doretha Shirley Goodson, of 137 Lawson Road, Union, died Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Goodson was born in Canton, N.C., February 12, 1931, a son of the late Rubin Lee and Zonie Hawkins Goodson. He graduated Bethel School in Canton, N.C., and the U.S. Forestry School. He later retired as a technician with the U.S. Forestry Service. Mr. Goodson was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and a member of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class. He was a former Cub Scout Master of Pack 48, an assistant Boy Scout Master of Troop 48 of the Monarch Community and portrayed Smokey the Bear for the school children and other activities in Union County. Mr. Goodson received two Certificates of Merit, a 25 Year Award and Conservation Award, all from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also received an appreciation plaque for dedicated service from the U.S. Forestry Service. Mr. Goodson was rewarded by having the Gay Goodson Road named in his honor for services rendered in Chester County. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Tempie Wade of Union; a son, Gay Clinton Goodson Jr. and wife Margaret of Union; two grandchildren, Josie Wade and Kody Palmer, both of Union; four sisters, Linda Anders of High Shoals, N.C., Florence Stepp of Canton, N.C., Lillian Kuykendall of Florahome, Fla., and Mary Mann of San Matea, Fla.; four brothers, Robert Goodson of Palatka, Fla., Frank Goodson of Florahome, Fla., Thurmond Goodson of Florida and Lloyd Goodson of Canton, N.C. Mr. Goodson was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, Floyd Goodson, Wylie Goodson, Thelma Goodson, Margaret Goodson and Idella G. Reece. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Monday, March 27, 2006, at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green, the Rev. Bobby Crocker and Mr. Alvin Feltman. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Johnny Anders, Jeff Anders, Dennis Russell, Michael Redmon, Randy Redmon and Bryan Morris. The following served as the honaray escort: Members of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, Chief Sam White and the retired employees of the U.S. Forestry Service. Memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1420 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Hospice of S.C., 128 Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The family received friends today prior to the service. The family is at the home of Ethel Russell, 2501 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
