Van Slooten, age 83 of Underwood, ND; formerly of Hettinger, will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger. Pastor Robert Boxrud will officiate with inurnment in the Hettinger Cemetery. Following the graveside service a time of fellowship and luncheon will be held at the Senior Citizens Center in Hettinger. The Staff and Residents of the Prairie View Nursing Home in Underwood are considered Honorary Bearers. GAY ELLA AMSDEN was born August 31, 1925 in Hettinger, ND. She was the seventh of eight children born to William L. Sr. and Helen E. (Butterfield) Amsden. Gay grew up on a farm north of Lodgepole where she attended Grand River School. She graduated from Hettinger High School in 1943. She attended nurses training in Montana until she married Don Van Slooten in November of 1944. A daughter Lynda was born to this union. The family lived for a short time in the Lodgepole area where Don worked for area farmers and ranchers. In 1947, the family moved to a ranch south of Keldron. Gay moved to Hettinger in 1955 along with her daughter where they lived for several years. Gay worked as a waitress at the City Cafe in Hettinger. Gay also attended church services with her brother Dean, and eventually, with her brother's guidance, was received in Christian Baptism on April 7th, 1979 at "Our Savior Lutheran Church" in Memphis Tennessee. In later years and due to her health, she resided in various communities and in February of 1990 she moved to the Prairie View Nursing Center in Underwood, ND. She passed from this life there on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the age of 83 years, 18 days. Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Gary Edwards, Sturgis, SD; 1 granddaughter, Doreen Edwards and her husband, Norman Teachman, Almond, NY; 1 sister, Shirley Jacobson, Watertown, SD., 2 brothers and 4 sisters-in-law, George and Joan Amsden, Williston, ND; William Jr. and Helen Amsden, Sunnyside, WA; Delores Amsden, Beulah, ND; Maxine Amsden, Memphis, TN. Gay was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister Blanche Smith and 3 brothers, Edward, Lynn, and Dean Amsden. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00pm on Thursday, September 25, at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.
