Gaylan was born on April 16th, 1946 to Emmund and Phyllis (Powers) Wilken, in Monticello, Iowa. He grew up on a farm and spent much of his time in the corn fields of Iowa, helping with the family farm. Gaylan was born on April 16th, 1946 to Emmund and Phyllis (Powers) Wilken, in Monticello, Iowa. He grew up on a farm and spent much of his time in the corn fields of Iowa, helping with the family farm. Gaylan graduated from Monticello High School, where he was active in sports and extracurricular activities. He studied at the University of Iowa and was a Hawkeye through and through. Gaylan worked as a concrete mason for most of his life, and he took great pride in his work. Gaylan served honorably in the U.S. Army 1968-70, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Gaylan had two sons, Arin Christopher, of Mondovi, and Adam Gaylan, of Durand. In spite of failing health, Gaylan was always at his best when spending time with his grandchildren, Annika (Arin) and Owen (Adam). Those times will always be remembered for the joy and pride he showed whenever they were near. He was a man of strong faith and as active as he could be in his church, attending services and Bible study groups right up until the time of his passing. Gaylan is survived by his sons, Arin and Adam, his mother, Phyllis of Monticello IA, brothers Grant (Patty) of Marion IA, and Dennis (Rebecca) of Cottageville SC; sisters, Diane Tuetken, Sheryl (John) McElmeel, Jill (Jay) Iben, all of Monticello IA, and Laurel (Mike) Solomon of Aiea, HI. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family. Gaylan was preceded in death by his father, Emmund, and a sister, Sharon. Visitation will take place beginning at 12:00 p.m., noon on Thursday, February 11th, at Salem Baptist Church in Eau Claire. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later time, with military honors, the place and date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements by Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home in EauClaire.
