Read More	Kale Funeral Home, Osceola, IA Geary Ivan Phillips, son of Ivan Phillips and Lydia Alma McReynolds Phillips was born June 25, 1925 in Carson, Iowa (Potawatamie County) and passed from this life Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Clarke County Hospital at 87 years of age. His parents moved to a farm in Clarke County when he was ten years old. Geary attended country school in Clarke County finishing the eighth grade. He then worked on the family farm until he was drafted in 1943 at the age of 18. Geary was selected to serve in the navy and sent for basic training at the Naval Station in Farragut, Idaho. Following basic training, he was assigned to the battleship USS California. In January, 1945, the ship was hit by a Kamikaze plane that killed 44 crewmen. Geary recalls that one of his jobs on the California was to catch the hot, empty shell casements ejected from the five-inch anti-aircraft guns as they fired at Japanese attack planes. Geary married Leanna Ruth Carson from the Woodburn area in 1947 and over the years, they were the parents of four children. In addition to farming, Geary also worked at what is now the Farm and Home Store in Osceola for nearly 22 years. Geary and Ann retired from farming in 2005 and have been living in Osceola. Geary was a member of the Osceola Eagles Lodge Aerie #3495 and was also a Past Member of the American Legion. In later years, Geary enjoyed visiting the farm and watching his boys farm. Those relatives who preceded Geary in death were his parents; brothers, Lloyd Phillips and Charles Phillips; sister, Roberta Schultz; grandsons, Eric Jason Phillips and Brandon Phillips. Geary leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Leanna Ruth Phillips of Osceola, IA, son, Chris (Deloris) Phillips of Osceola, IA, son, Marty (Trish) Phillips of Osceola, IA, daughter, Phyllis (Frank W.) Jones of Osceola, IA, daughter, Janet (Frank D.) Jones of Grand River, IA; grandchildren, Jerad (Rachael) Phillips of Lisbon, IA; Geary B (Rechelle) Phillips of Osceola, IA; Clinton (Laurie) Phillips of Osceola, IA; David Jones of Cummings, IA; Amy (Garry) Cunningham of Indianola, IA; Erin (Ryan) VanRoekel of Bella Vista, AR; great-grandchildren, Austin, Colton, Logan, Josi, Avery, Bria, LeAnna, Makayla; sisters, Elva Downing of Osceola, IA, and Vada (Harold) Wickliff of Newton, IA as well as other relatives and many friends.
