King, husband of the late Claire Swanson King, died Friday, December 29, 1995. Born in Georgetown , he was a son of the late Richard Thomas and Ellen Julia Meggett King. He graduated from The Citadel and was elected to the Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. After graduation, he received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was an All-America end for the Army football team and was a cadet captain in the corps of cadets. He was an Air Force veteran. In 1944, he was named commander of the 500th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force. His B-29 was shot down on a Tokyo raid, and he spent the remaining year of the war as a prisoner of war in Japan. He graduated from the National War College and was assigned to the Air Proving Ground Command at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. He was promoted to brigadier general. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Surviving are a son, Richard King Jr. of Melbourne, Fla.; sisters, Julia Boyd of Florence, Eleanor Wilson of McLean, Va., and Elizabeth King and Margaret Harvey, both of Georgetown ; and one grandchild.
