Read More	Gene Conrad Halls Longtime La Plata County resident Gene Conrad Halls died of lung cancer Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, in Cedar Hills, Utah. He was 91. Mr. Halls was born to David and Lillian Emma (Dean) Halls on Oct. 1, 1921, in Mancos. He was the ninth of 10 children. On Aug. 10, 1940, he married Inez Marie Bowling in Aztec. Mr. Halls joined the Navy and was stationed on the destroyer the USS McCook during World War II. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach on D-Day. After his honorable discharge, Mr. Halls attended the Capitol College of Pharmacy and became a registered pharmacist. Mr. and Mrs. Halls settled in Mancos, where Mr. Halls owned and operated Mancos Drug. In 1950, the Halls family moved to Durango, where Mr. Halls worked at Parson's Drug Store and later became the co-owner of Durango Drug Co., and Plaza Pharmacy with Delph Haynie. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Halls owned Durango Drug Co. Mr. and Mrs. Halls were licensed as a family foster home by the Colorado Department of Public Welfare, and at one time were awarded the Outstanding Foster Home award. "Many foster children were welcomed and loved in the Halls home over the years," his family said. Mr. Halls was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various positions through the years. He loved horses and the outdoors, and spent time each summer riding with his family in the San Juan Mountains. He also enjoyed hunting, and during his younger days, enjoyed spending time hunting from his cabin in Mancos. Mr. Halls was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Inez Hall; and three grandchildren. He is survived by his children LaDenna Gladden of Marvel, Alisha Moreno of Bayfield, Sarah Halls of Durango, Lou Anna Waite of Clearfield, Utah, Gregory Halls of American Fork, Utah, Richard Halls of Cedar Hills, Penny Tolman of Tooele, Utah, and Olive Marie Driskell of Oklahoma City; 33 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2 Hilltop Circle in Durango. Viewing will be held before the service beginning at 10 a.m. Bishop Craig Brown will preside. Burial will take place at the Mancos Cemetery immediately after the service.
