In 1920, he and his family were living on 3rd Street west of Court, in Ponca, Nebraska. The 1920 US Census lists: Charles, 45, head, thresher, b. NE On October 16, 1940, the United States wasn't yet in World War II, but young men had to register for the draft. Gene walked into the draft board office, and told them that his mother, Lizzie Briney, would always know his address. He said he was working for Finkbine Lumber Company in Ponca, Nebraska. The clerk noted that Gene was 5'10", weighed 148 lbs, had hazel eyes and brown hair. Much later, the cemetery records note that Gene was a war veteran. Gene married Janet Antoinette Walsh/Carpenter/Chaffin , an Iowa girl.
