Gene Fredrick Furman was born June 17, 1924 in Minot, North Dakota, the fourth of five children born to Guy V. and Hannah (Holeton) Furman. His parents came to Ward County in 1916 and purchased a homestead. Gene went to country school in McKinley Township the first five years. Who can forget the stories Gene told about the teacher he disliked at McKinley. This was much to the dismay of his mother who had also been a teacher prior to her marriage. Gene then attended country school at Nedrose School No. 4. Gene recalled going to school in the winter in a sleigh drawn by horse and later he and his sister rode (Double) houseback to school. After he completed the eighth grade he enrolled at the Minot High School where he graduated in 1942. After graduation he enrolled at the Minot State Teachers Colle (now Minot State University) and completed two quarters. Then as his father’s health was failing, he quit college to help with the farming in Nedrose and McKinley Townships, Ward County, North Dakota. His father was still farming with horses at the time so Gene worked the fields with horses for two years. The Ward County Draft Board reclassified him to 1A and he went for his physical in March 1945. He was called for active service in the Army on November 28, 1945 and sent to Fort Snelling where he was sworn into active duty. He went through “Bootcamp” at Camp Roberts and then was transferred to Fort Ord, California. His next duty station was Pittsburg, California and then a month later he was crossing the Pacific Ocean for Japan. Gene related that he almost missed his 21st birthday as the ship crossed the International Date Line on June 16, 1946. “I went to sleep on June 15 and work up on June 17th.” He was assigned to the honor guard company that guarded and maintained General Douglas McArthur’s private residence in Tokyo. He remained here until shortly after Christmas in 1946 when he was shipped home and discharged on February 11, 1947 at Fort Lewis, Washington. He then enrolled at Minot State College for the spring quarter. He then transferred to Iowa State at Ames, Iowa and studied Electrical engineering. His father died on September 21, 1948, and Gene then returned to North Dakota to manage the farm for his mother. He transferred his credits to the North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University) where he graduated with a degree in agricultural engineering in June 1952. He returned to the Minot area where he operated the family farm until 1987. He moved to the Lutheran Homes (now Trinity Nursing Home) in January 1996. Gene never married and described himself as “A happy bachelor.” Gene was a member of the American Legion; he served on the Minot Rural Fired Department Board of Directors for 30 years and was a member of the Mouse River Loop Genealogy Society of Minot. Members of the genealogical society will recall that Gene was our forerunner in the computer technology field. He was using computers before the rest of us even owned one. Always diligently indexing information for us. Always sharing his contagious smile, quick sense of humor and encouraging us on our way. Our sympathy goes to his surviving sister, Mrs. Robert D. (Isabelle Elaine) Thompson, of rural Minot, her son Dean and daughter Sue and Karen; Gene’s brother Francis’ son and daughter Guy and Carmen and their families. Funeral Services were held for Gene on Friday, July 9, 1999 and he was laid to rest in the Rosehill Memorial Park Cemetery, Minot, ND.
