He was preceded in death by his parents, E Minnis and Nora of Bim; his first wife, Billie Jean Chafin Kuhn; and his second wife Wilma Jean Trusley Kuhn. Read More	Gene Kuhn 80 of Madison, passed away on January 22, 2009 in Boone Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, E Minnis and Nora of Bim; his first wife, Billie Jean Chafin Kuhn; and his second wife Wilma Jean Trusley Kuhn. He is survived by a daughter, Joan Richards and her husband Steve of Madison; two sons Allen Duane and his wife Vickie of Turtle Creek, and Brett and his wife Buffy of Madison; four grand children, B.J. Richard and her husband Jason Rihel of Boston, MA, Michael Kuhn of Turtle Creek and Bretta and Nathan Kuhn of Madison; one sister, Darlene McKenzie of Morehead, KY; several nieces and nephews. Gene was employed for over 40 years in the coal industry working for Y & O Coal Company, ARMCO Steel Corporation and was an Assistant Superintendent for AT Massey. He also served as a federal mine inspector for three years. Gene was a proud graduate of Van High School where he played baseball and football, being a part of Van's first football victory over Scott High School in 1945. He also played Coal Company League Baseball for Y & O Coal Company. Gene was also active coaching in Van Little League, Pony League and Senior League baseball. He had a great love of the West Virginia Mountaineers, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis Rams were always active interests of Gene. He could always be found listening or watching his beloved Mountaineers whether it was football or basketball. Stan Musial was his favorite Cardinal player of all time and the Rams were both a source of joy and irritation. Politics was a second career for Gene. He twice served on the Boone County Board of Education and was a leader in gaining funding for many of the current schools in Boone County and the Boone Career and Technical Center. Gene was also a leader in providing money for increased teacher salaries. In 1988, he was elected to the Boone County Commission on a platform of providing clean drinking water to the citizens of Boone County. When he took office less than 50% of Boone County citizens had access to clean drinking water. When he left office in 2001 the percentage had grown to almost 90%. His hard work at gaining funding from the West Virginia Legislature led to the building of Community Centers in over 10 communities in Boone County and provided a place for senior citizens to meet and be served hot meals. His efforts also provided lighting to the Van High School baseball field at Wharton, the expansion of the press box at Scott High School's football field, partial funding and an air conditioning unit for the football field house at Sherman High School and a first class indoor baseball facility and upgrades to the baseball field also at Sherman High School. Gene was also a member of the Boone County Ambulance Authority and through his efforts the BCAA became self-sufficient. Gene had a wide variety of interests and many great accomplishments but most of all he loved his children and grandchildren and took tremendous pride in their accomplishments. They, in return, absolutely adored and respected Gene and will be sustained by the lessons he taught them throughout their lives. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville. Following visitation there will be a short service with Rev. Tom Bias officiating. Graveside service will be 11:00 am Sunday at Boone Memorial Park, Madison.
