Read More	Genevieve "Gen" Lorraine (Frisby) Krell, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on 31 December 2016, in Sioux Falls, from the infirmities of advanced age. She reached the age of 100 years 9 months and 7 days. She was born on 24 March 1916, on a farm near Britton, in northeastern South Dakota to Walter and Maria "Mary" (Wanken) Frisby. She was the youngest of nine children of this union. (Her father subsequently remarried and had two more children.) Her mother died of complications of smallpox and pregnancy when Gen was a little over a year old. Her Aunt, Margaret (Frisby) Curley and her husband, Daniel, welcomed her into their family of four children in their farm home northwest of Tea, SD, and raised her to adulthood. Her parents, Walter and Mary Frisby, and Uncle Dan and Aunt Margaret "Maggie" Curley, her beloved husband, Donald, four brothers and six sisters have all predeceased her. Gen grew up on the Curley farm and attended Goldenrod District 66 in rural Lincoln County. She was a brilliant student, skipping two grades in the school and graduating from the 8th grade when she was only 2 months past 12 years of age. She then attended Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls. While there she won the South Dakota State Bookkeeping Championship and graduated second in her class despite being two-years younger than all of her classmates. She was barely 16 when she graduated in 1932. She was the sole remaining member of her class at her death. She came of age in a dreadful time for the country: the Great Depression enveloped the nation with bank failures, farm and home foreclosures, and high unemployment; an unceasing drought and massive dust storms gripped the plains; and the clouds of the war that would engulf the world a few years hence loomed on the horizon. Although a very gifted student, the financial struggles of the time prevented her from attending college.But in a triumph of love and faith in a better future, she married Donald "Don" Krell on 21 October 1936 in a double-wedding with her cousin, Robert Curley, and Zerelda Hurley. She had known Don since childhood; both attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Tea, SD, and Goldenrod School. Their families lived on adjoining farms and visited often. Five children were born to their union, Rosalie (Mario) Pliego, Ronald (Linda) Krell, Robert (Dorthy) Krell, Brian (Ellen) Krell, and Sheila (Robert) Gunderson. All of her children are still living. One son-in-law, Dr. Mario Pliego, has predeceased her as has one daughter-in-law, Barbara (Hartke) Krell, one grandson, Michael Krell, and two great-grandsons, Gino Pliego and Derrick Krell. She has 16 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Six grandsons are her pallbearers. All of her remaining grandchildren are honorary pallbearers. After their marriage, they farmed northwest of Tea, SD, until Don's death in 1978. In 1958 she began working in Sioux Falls for Paul McKean Autos as the firm's bookkeeper. After the Buick dealership was sold to Vern Eide in 1965, she continued working for the new firm until retiring from full-time employment in 1981. However, she continued to work for the dealership part-time until illness forced her permanent retirement in 1987. She was an active member of the congregation of St. Nicholas Parish in Tea, where she was a parishioner for 72 years. She volunteered for parish activities including the Altar Society, serving a term as its President, and worked at many a Parish Chicken Dinner! After moving to Sunnycrest Village in Sioux Falls in 1988, she was a faithful parishioner at St. Michaels for 23 years. After her move to Avera Prince of Peace Extended Care community in 2011, she was happy to begin the practice of daily Mass and Communion at their chapel, a practice she continued throughout the remaining years of her life. Although confined to a wheelchair since 1988, she led an active life visiting with her friends and relatives at Sunnycrest Retirement Apartments (at one time, three of her sisters and a niece lived there as well). She loved playing cards and working the Crossword and Jumble-word puzzles in the newspaper. She had lived at Sunnycrest longer than any other resident when increasing infirmities forced her to move to Prince of Peace. Gen amazed and inspired all who knew her with her grit and determination to overcome her physical limitations and enjoy her life to the fullest. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday January 4, 2017 at the George Boom Funeral Home, 3408 E 10th St, Sioux Falls, with family visitation from 5-7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 140 W Brian St., Tea, SD, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday January 5, 2017. Rev. Kevin O'Dell, the pastor at St. Nicholas Parish will officiate. A reception at St. Nicholas’ Parish Hall will be held immediately following the service. After the reception, all are invited to accompany the family to the graveside at St. Michael Cemetery, 3001 N Cliff Ave., Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be made by mail to: St. Nicholas Parish. The family appreciates the compassionate assistance of those at the Avera Prince of Peace Nursing Home and Hospice, who cared for Gen in the last years of her life.
