His father preceded him in death; his mother survives in Lima. Mr. Schafer was the owner of Sportsman's Bar and Grill. He attended St. John's Elementary School and was a 1966 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School. He graduated from Northwestern Business College. "Jerry" Schafer, 62, died at 7:55 p.m. April 30, 2010, at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born March 12, 1948, in Lima to Harold W. and Mary Cardone Schafer. His father preceded him in death; his mother survives in Lima. Mr. Schafer was the owner of Sportsman's Bar and Grill. He attended St. John's Elementary School and was a 1966 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School. He graduated from Northwestern Business College. He was a member of the American Legion Post 96 and of the Lima Softball Umpires Association. He enjoyed bowling and played softball for many years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family playing cards and games. His sense of humor will always be remembered. Survivors also include two daughters, Amy J. (David) Kendrick and Natalie R. Schafer, both of Lima; two grandchildren, Kiara and Gianna Schafer; two brothers, Harold "Fritz" (Antoinette) Schafer, of Lima, and Carl W. (Susan) Schafer, of Tiffin; two sisters, Cecilia M. Schafer Shope and Maria C. (Paul) Illig, both of Lima; 14 nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and great-nephews; and a close friend, Peggy Lucius, of Lima. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roman J. Schafer. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church, Lima. Father David Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. A Parish Wake service will begin at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or to the Lima Central Catholic Scholarship Fund.
