Polk Street, Washington, died Thursday afternoon, August 25, 1983m at the long term care unit, Washington County Hospital. Mr. Canott had been in failing health for the past five years and was seriously ill the past two days. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Sunday in Jones Funeral Home, Washington. The Rev. A memorial fund has been established to the long term care unit of the county hospital. Mr. Canott was born July 23, 1890, in Lone Tree, the son of Jerry and Jane Walker Canott. He attended Wellman Schools and on June 28, 1918, married Martha Davis at Montezuma. Mrs. Martha Canott preceded her husband in death on August 10, 1955, In February 1958, Mr. Canott married Fern Bell in Arkansas. Well known in his community as a gardner and flower lover, Mr. Canott farmed in Washington county prior to his retirement. He was a veteran of World War I, and member of the Schantz Mitchell Post of the American Legion, Crawfordsville and United Church of Crawfordsville. While in the service, Jr. Canott served at Camp Pike in Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Fern Canott of Washington; three children, Mrs David (Victoria) Griffith of Crawfordsville, Sam Canott of Wapello and Doris Brown of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one stepson Richard Bell of Roswell, New Mexico; five step grandchildren, seven step great grandchildren; one brother, Roy Canott of Wellman and one sister, Jessie Glider of Washington. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Canott, six brothers and sisters and one stepson.
