Hargens was born May 4, 1921 to George B. and Bessie (Snyder) Hargens on a farm north of Miller. He attended elementary school near his home. Hargens, 78, of rural Orient, died Monday, December 6, 1999 at Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller, South Dakota. George A. Hargens was born May 4, 1921 to George B. and Bessie (Snyder) Hargens on a farm north of Miller. He attended elementary school near his home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith as a child and was a member of St. Michael's and Orient Lutheran Church all of his adult life. He served in the Army during World War II as a Tank Commander in the 601 Tank Destroyer Battalion. He spent 32 months in battle in Algeria, French Morocco, Sicily, Tunisia, Italy, France and Germany. He was twice wounded in battle and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster. Following his discharge from the Army in 1945, he returned to the family farm. He married Lois Warren February 9, 1948 in Huron. He farmed in the rural Miller and Orient area until 1995 when he "sort of" retired. His greatest joy in life was getting on a John Deere tractor and farming. He was a member of the VFW and Polo American Legion. He served many years on the board of directors of many cooperatives including 36 years on Ree Electric/Dakota Engery, 28 years on East River Electric Cooperative and 18 years on Basin Electric Cooperative. He received the NRECA regional award for Outstanding Service Region IV, the East River Eminent Service Award in 1994, and in 1998 was inducted into the South Dakota Coop "Hall of Fame". He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Justin in 1982; one sister, Eileen (Herb) Stender in 1979; and one sister-in-law, Carol (Richard) Hargens in 1999. Visitation: Reck Funeral Home, Miller, SD - Dec. 9, afternoon with evening prayer service. Funeral: Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller - Dec. 10, 1999. Officiating: Rev. Andrea Hoslen & Rev. Gary Anderson. Pallbearers: Jeff Hargens, Tim Hargens, Theron Holt, Joel Warren, Brett Warren and David Warren. Burial: Howell Cemetery - Orient, SD
