Smit, who have enjoyed one of the longer marriage partnerships of the Lennox vicinity, have been wed 57 years and their record as residents here reads parallel to this. This pioneer couple was married near Wellsburg, lA., February 23, 1882. Three days after their marriage they came to Dakota Territory, and during the first summer resided with her brother, Harm Knock. That same year they purchased a 160-acre farm seven miles south of Lennox for five dollars per acre, and took up their residence there. They have resided continuously on this same farm since—a span of 57 years. Previous to making their residence here, Mr. and Mrs. Smit lived in Grundy County, lA., and upon coming to this vicinity, made the trip from Abbot Crossing, lA., to Lincoln county in two days. All of the land in the vicinity south of here had been homesteaded when they arrived. Mr. Smit was born November 11, 1859, in Weener, Ostfriesland, Germany. At the age of 13, in 1873, he came with his parents to this country and to Grundy County, lA., where they settled on a farm several miles northeast of Wellsburg. Here he stayed with his parents, until his marriage to Miss Gretje Knock, a daughter of Ontje Knock, February 23, 1882. Mrs. Smit was born near Shannon, IL., April 12, 1862. It was also in her second decade that her parents settled in Grundy county, farming southeast of Wellsburg. Mrs. Smit resided with her parents until her marriage. Upon coming to Dakota territory and staying with her brother, Harm Knock, who was unmarried, Mrs. Smit tended to the household duties and Mr. Smit assisted in carrying on the farming routine. Mr. and Mrs. Smit are charter members of the Delaware Reformed church south of Lennox, and Mr. Smit, who served as first deacon with John Prins, has served either as deacon or elder of the congregation since its organization with the exception of a few years. They are the only charter members still affiliated. Mr. and Mrs. Smit have eight children, namely: Henry, Christine (Mrs. Ude Symens), Grace (Mrs. George Dannen), Ontje, Folkert, John, Fannie and George. Ten children were born to this union, two having passed away in infancy.
