He was born June 15, 1873, at Camanche Township in Clinton County, Iowa. George attended St. Mary's school in Clinton. He is the only one of the Mongoven's ten children to remain on the family's 98.5-acre farm at Camanche for the majority of his life. George and his dad had several major arguments. The Mongoven family insisted that Dennis was insane – "senile" might be a more appropriate term nowadays. He appeared in front of a commission in September 1896 to determine this, but was found sane. Unfortunately, one of the Mongoven squabbles turned violent three years later. The article on this page was published in the Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette on April 7, 1899. Dennis Mongoven was subsequently placed in the Iowa State Hospital for the Insane in Buchanan County, where he is listed in the 1900 census. He was released and was living with his wife, Catherine, at Clinton by the time of the 1905 Iowa state census. On Iowa state and federal censuses, George's listed occupation was always farm laborer or farmer. By 1903, his parents were old and tired and had quit-claimed the Camanche property to him in a deed dated December 4, 1903. As owner of the farm, George often hosted family members who came home to visit, recuperate, or stay indefinitely. Recall that George's oldest brother, Henry James, dodged the authorities for a while in 1907 when being sought for failure to pay alimony and child support. The old family farm provided safe haven, and Henry enjoyed his brother's company, until a Lee County Sheriff arrived to arrest and take him back to an Illinois jail cell. George decided to sell the farm to his neighbor, William H. Dunn, on May 25, 1911. With the warranty deed signed by both parties, an agreement was made that allowed George to continue living and farming on the 98.5-acre property. According to the 1915 Iowa state census, George's sister-in-law, the recently widowed Elizabeth (Traufler) Mongoven, and her son, Frankie, had spent two months living on the farm with him. It appears that family members felt comfortable at the farm, and that George was an accommodating and hospitable host. The U.S. entered World War I in 1917 and announced a series of three drafts. The final one of these, held across the country on September 12, 1918, was for men 18-45, born between September 11, 1872, and September 11, 1900. George, age 45, appeared at his local draft board and registered. He listed his nearest relative as H. J. Mongoven – his brother, Henry, who lived with him at the Camanche farm until the early 1920s. The draft card is interesting because it offers a description of the man. George next had trouble with the law. An Iowa newspaper, The Davenport Democrat and Leader, ran three articles on August 21-23, 1927. We will never know for sure how George came into possession of ten $10 counterfeit bills at Davenport. George appears to have given federal investigators two stories, if the newspaper reports can be believed. When arrested he told them he had won the money playing craps with a group of horsemen at the fairgrounds. Later, he claimed to have gotten them from an acquaintance after betting on a horse race at the Mississippi Valley Fair and Exposition. George told federal officials that he gave the man – who once worked for him on the farm at Camanche – $30 to place a bet. After the race, the man returned to George and gave him his portion of the winnings: ten $10 bills. But the bills were obviously bogus, as the printing was fuzzy and the paper wasn't genuine. It was said that George attempted to pass some of the bills before being arrested by two Davenport police officers. He entered a not guilty plea. The case against him may have been dropped, since no follow-up accounts of the incident can be found. The 1930 federal census shows George at the Camanche farm. In an agreement with Peter Van Doren, the property owner at the time, George paid rent by offering one-half of the crops he produced. George died at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, on May 27, 1934, at the age of 60. A short obituary appeared in the Clinton Herald on May 29: "Funeral services for George Mongoven, formerly of Clinton, who died Sunday morning in Mercy hospital, will be held Thursday morning with mass at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's church. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. The body reposes in the Delaney chapel where friends may call until 8:30 a.m. Thursday. "Mr. Mongoven was born June 15, 1873, in Clinton, the son of Dennis and Catherine Darcey Mongoven. He received his education in St. Mary's school. For many years he farmed in the vicinity of Camanche. "Of his immediate family he is survived by three brothers, Francis Mongoven, who came today from Kansas, Henry, and Edward Mongoven, living in the east, who will arrive to attend the funeral services, also a niece, Mrs. Carmen Strausberger, of St. Louis, Mo."
