George Peterson, 65, died in Kearney on Wednesday after being found unresponsive at his Loup City home on Monday, his sister-in-law, Sharon Cech, said. Cech is one of the newspaper's two full-time employees. The other is Peterson's wife, Beverly. "We are really in trouble now," Cech said on Thursday. "He did so much, and you don't think about it until he's gone." The paper also employs five part-time workers. Cech said George Peterson did a lot of work from his home and e-mailed stories to the paper because of the difficulty he had getting around town. In his earlier years, Cech said, Peterson was extremely active in the community, serving on the Loup City Chamber of Commerce and numerous boards. She said he was a very generous person and gave to things such as the Loup City Community Center and Loup City EMTs. "He was a very active person and he was pretty well liked by everybody," Cech said of Peterson. "He enjoyed everybody, and he was just a really super nice guy." Peterson, who was born and raised in Loup City, earned a degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He had owned the Sherman County Times for 30 years. He belonged to the Nebraska Press Association and American Newspaper Association until the time of his death and was president of the Nebraska Press Association in 1985. Cech said Peterson did everything from writing news stories to columns and editorials. "I think he enjoyed all the aspects of (the newspaper business)," Cech said. "It was just something he loved."
