Born December 18, 1920 in Monroe, NC, a son of the late Junius Stearns, Sr. and Ethel Ellis Stearns, he served as a City Councilman in Maxton, NC during the late 1940's; Chairman of the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission in the late 40's and early 1950's; and a member of the Boy Scout Council, and both a Boy and Cub Scout Master with the Cape Fear Council in Maxton. Mr. Stearns was also a Past President of the Mormax Club of Maxton, the oldest service organization in NC, and a member of the Maxton Masonic Lodge. Having served from 1939 to 1945 in the US Army and attaining the rank of Sergeant, he became a member of the American Legion in Maxton. Prior to his move to Charlotte in 1964, Mr. Stearns was co-owner, along with his late brother, Junius Stearns, Jr., of the J.S. Stearns Construction Company. Since his move, as a project manager for the McDivett and Street Company, he supervised the construction of many projects -- among them, Olympic High School and the Columbia (SC), Greensboro (NC) and the Morgantown (WV) Coliseums. Following his career with McDivett and Street and prior to his retirement in 1990, Mr. Stearns worked as project manager for the Thurston Motor Lines Construction Division. A member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, he served as a volunteer for several Habitat for Humanity projects in Charlotte. Mr. Stearns is survived by his son, George B. Stearns, Jr. of the home; one brother, Frank Stearns of Winston-Salem, NC; one sister, Rachel Montgomery of Camden, SC; four grandchildren, Chris, David and Steven Schoolfield and Jamie Schoolfield Hendrix; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Hendrix and Morgan Crisp Schoolfield. In addition to his brother, Junius, Mr. Stearns' wife, Jimmie Steele Stearns, and daughter, Sarah Schoolfield, also preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter (please, designate checks 'For Research'), 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220; Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 34397, Charlotte, NC 28234; or to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207. My notes: George was the youngest of five children born to Junius Stitt Stearns (1885-1965) and his wife Ethel Elvira Ellis (1893-1956). He and his wife Jimmie were both wonderful people, and are greatly missed.
