Lee DARLINGTON -- George Bishop Lee, 87, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Bethea Baptist Health Care Center in Darlington after an illness. He was born in Conway, a son of the late J.W. and Lizzy Dudley Lee. He was an Army veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran. He served in the European theater of operations, where he was a prisoner of war in Germany for 14 months. He was chairman of the Horry County Draft Board during the Korean War. Mr. Lee was a former member of Maple Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school, deacon and trustee. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Conway and the Annex class, where he served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of deacons and treasurer. He was a former Man of the Year for the Conway Kiwanis Club and former commander of the American Legion Post 111. Mr. Lee retired as president of Jerry Cox Co. after a 45-year career with the company and continued to serve on the board of directors. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Hudson Lee of Bethea Baptist Retirement Residence in Darlington; a son, Thomas Lee of Conway; a brother, Ernest Lee of Conway; two sisters, Pearl Hudson of Conway and Gladys Hinson of Whiteville, N.C.; two half brothers; two half sisters; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Conway. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 415, Conway 29526, or Pee Dee Chapter of Mercy Hospice of Florence. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel, is in charge.
