Morning Laid to Rest In Sacred Heart Cemetery at Oleyen Funeral rites for the late George Brester of Oleyen were held Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the Sacred Heart Church at Oleyen. He passed away at his home Wednesday, May 18th after an illness of about two months. The deceased was born in Westphalia, Germany on September 8, 1854, and at the time of his death, had attained the age of 77 years, 8 months and 10 days. Fifty one years ago he bade farewell to his native country and embarked for America, eventually settling on a farm near Oleyen. On January 8, 1883 he was joined in holy wedlock to Miss Gertrude Vogtheinrich at Tabor. Following their marriage they resided on their farm until about 22 years ago when the wife was called to the Great Beyond and Mr. Brester moved to Oleyen. He was a faithful member of the Oleyen church. Surviving him are one daughter, Ceceilia, who has made her home with her father, and 3 sons, Henry, Louis and Ben. One daughter died in infancy. Fourteen grandchildren also survive him. '''''''''''''''''''' The Howells Journal (Howells, Nebr.), May 27, 1932, p. 1, col. 3 GEORGE BRESTER, AN EARLY RESIDENT OF THIS PRECINCT, ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS The death of Mr. George Brester, at about 7:00 o'clock on Wednesday morning, May 18th, brought a feeling of sadness to the hearts of his many friends. It had been apparent for many months that he was gradually growing more feeble and since the first of March he has been bedfast, but throughout his long period of failing strength he received devoted care and attention at the hands of his daughter, Miss Cecilia, and his sons. She had been the light of the home since early childhood and when her mother was called in death she quietly filled her place at the head of the household and was ever constant in loving duty to her father who passed the closing years of his life amid the serene quietude of one of nature's beauty spots, at Olean, in the shadow of the spire of the church in which he had been a devout worshipper for years. We well remember when Mr. Brester came to America, fifty-one years ago, from Germany where he was born in Westphalia on September 8, 1854. He came direct to this county and he and this editor shared the hospitality of the home of Mrs. Jos. Rose and her late husband on their homestead in Lincoln precinct while Mr. Brester was working on a neighboring farm to Mr. Rose's place, in which he invested his savings, and we had come up from Schuyler and were engaged in setting out trees on the near-by Phelps timber claim. Those were days of joyous anticipation for our friend as he worked and saved in striving to prepare a home for his promised bride in the Fatherland. In the spring of 1883 he was joined by his sweetheart, Miss Gertrude Vogtheinrich, and upon her arrival they were married at St. Mary's church at Tabor on June 8th. He was an exceptionally active man, interested in the culture of trees, fruit and flowers which added to the beauty and comfort of their home. For twenty-seven years they lived in happy companionship, during which five children blessed our home, but one died in infancy. Twenty-two years ago, in 1910, the soul of the beloved wife and mother wended its way to the great beyond and passed int the realms of the redeemed, leaving him his daughter, Cecilia, and three sons, Henry, Louis and Ben, to gather up the broken strands of life adjust themselves to their great loss. These children, all living in this community, are now again bereft in the sorrow of their present bereavement, which deprives them of the love and counsel of one who was to them an ideal father. The memorial rites were held Saturday morning and opened at 9:30 with prayers at the family residence at Olean, which has been the home of the departed for the past twenty-two years. These services were continued with requiem mass at Sacred Heart church at which Rev. Wm. Klein, attended by Rev. Jos. Rose of of Wisner, also officiated. The church choir participated in the sacred rites, both at the church and at the tomb in the nearby cemetery where the remains were laid to rest in the family plot besides those of the beloved wife. The funeral was one of the largest held at the church in recent years and the large attendance testified to the high esteem in which the departed was held by his fellowmen. This was a deserved tribute to a long life well spent during which he enjoyed the unlimited confidence of his associates. An ardent church worker, his activities in this line were steadfast and true, having cheerfully accepted all obligations placed upon him as a devout Catholic. His heart instincts were always inspired thoughts of courtesy and kindliness to his associates and mercy toward all. Ever just in his daily life, charitable in thought and deed our friend leaves a rich heritage, the memory of which will outlast any memorial of stone or marble.
