Description	:	Civil War Veteran Sergeant, Co. D, 18th Massachusetts Infantry George was the son of Abraham and Elizabeth (LeBaron) Thomas. George was a 20 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted on May 10, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Corporal with Company D. He was absent from his Regiment from August 11, 1862 when he was admitted to the General Hospital at Harrison's Landing, VA due to contracting measles, and also developed scurvy, which resulted in diseased gums and the loss of fourteen teeth. ... George was a 20 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted on May 10, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Corporal with Company D. He was absent from his Regiment from August 11, 1862 when he was admitted to the General Hospital at Harrison's Landing, VA due to contracting measles, and also developed scurvy, which resulted in diseased gums and the loss of fourteen teeth. He was sent aboard the Hospital Steamer "Commodore" on August 13th and admitted to the General Hospital at West Philadelphia on August 19th, also having contracted diarrhea. He was granted a furlough home during his time in the hospital and, at age 22, married Mary Osborne Clark, the 19-year-old daughter of Gilbert and Polly, at Middleboro, MA on Oct. 5, 1862. He was reduced in rank to Private on Oct. 12, 1862, due to his extended absence from his Regiment, before he returned to duty on October 21, 1862. He was eventually restored in rank to Corporal and subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant on an unknown date. He was engaged with his regiment in 1862 at the Siege of Yorktown, the Peninsula Campaign, and the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862. He was further engaged with his regiment in 1863 battles at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, and Rappahannock Station. He reenlisted for three years service at Beverly Ford, VA on Feb. 7, 1864 and received a bonus of $178.66 and a 35 day furlough. In 1864 he fought with his regiment in the Campaign against Richmond from May 1, 1864. While the remnants of the 18th Mass. were transferred to the 32nd Mass. Infantry, George was mustered out of military service on Nov. 2, 1864 as a supernumerary.
