After lingering for more than a month suffering from a wound caused by a rifle shot which he sustained while hunting rabbits on his farm near Blue Grass, George Plett died Tuesday evening at St. Luke's Hospital where he had been confined since the time of the accident 18 Dec. last. Mr. Plett had been hunting rabbits and with his gun in hand attempted to crawl through a fence. It was while he was thus engaged that the weapon was discharged. He discovered his clothes were afire but did not realize for the time being that he had been shot. He was assisted to his home and Dr. Vander Veer of Blue Grass summoned. The physician realizing the seriousness of the injury called Dr. Henry Matthey of Davenport for a consultation. Mr. Plett was taken to the hospital and every possible effort made to save his life. The shot entered the left side just below the heart and took a downward course coming out the back. Although every expedient measure possible was taken, a weak heart and the loss of blood sustained at the time of the accident lessened the patients change for recovery. The deceased had operated a stock farm with his brother 1/2 miles south of Pleasant Prarie and had enjoyed a wide acquaintence among live stock raisers in this vicinity. He was born in Muscatine county Nov. 23, 1871 and was 45 years old at the time of his death. There are surviving one sister, Lizzie Plett and seven brothers, Herman, Louis, William, Charles, John, August and Frank Plett. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Davenport Democrat & Leader - page 9 - Sunday - Jan. 28, 1917. The funeral of George Plett was held Saturday afternoon from the family home south of Pleasant Prarie with services at 2 o'clock at the Blue Grass church where Rev. J.A. Kyle of the Unitarian church of Davenport, officiated. Interment was made in the Blue Grass cemetery. The Hillside Camp #2470, M.W.A. attended the service in a body. The following were pallbearers: Herman, Charles, August, John & Frank Plett and August Belter.
