Mr. Walther, paralyzed from the waist down, had spent almost 55 years at the hospital where he was taken following the incident and where the efforts of some of Portland's top surgeons failed to restore his ability to walk. He had undergone about a dozen operations. Mr. Walther had been a favorite patient at the hospital and for many years operated a greeting card and candy bar business from a cart equipped with a jingling bell. His motorized wheelchair was regarded as a wonder of its time. He later became bedridden by his wish that he never had to go to a nursing home was granted. He had ventured outside the hospital only once or twice on trips and regarded Good Samaritan as his home. Mr. Walther was born January 22, 1902, at Chenowith, near the present community of Underwood in eastern Skamania County. His parents were early settlers Charles and Mary Walther. He grew up in the area. According to reports, Walther and a companion were on a hill on the outskirts of Underwood when federal agents approached. One of the agents, armed with a new gun, tripped over a log and the weapon discharged, hitting Walther in the back. Walther, his friend, and a third man were indicted by a federal grand jury for violation of the Volstead Act. The third man was convicted and Walther's friend, who had become a government witness, died before he was brought to court. Walther steadfastly denied he knew anything about the illegal still, which the prohibition agents had under surveillance at the time of the incident. The charges against him were dismissed. Walther's case attracted widespread attention and Senator Charles McNary and Representative Charles H. Martin and other influential persons sponsored a bill in Congress which awarded him compensation of $100 a month for life. His death Saturday was attributed to pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and a urinary tract infection. He is survived by four sisters, Kathleen Sarnahan, Violet Earle and Frances Oswald, all of Portland, and Louise I. Vandemarr of Sherwood, Oregon. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Miller and Tracey Funeral Home, Portland, and interment followed at the historic Christ-Zada Cemetery in Underwood.
