Description	:	George Colville Gillan was born March 12, 1852, in Ballymena, Antrim County, Northern Ireland. He came with his parents at the age of 12 to Tazwell County, Illinois, where he was brought up and educated in the public schools. He attended the Illinois State Normal and the Bloomington law School. He came with his parents at the age of 12 to Tazwell County, Illinois, where he was brought up and educated in the public schools. He attended the Illinois State Normal and the Bloomington law School. After teaching school in Illinois, he came to Nebraska in the summer of 1887, taught school that winter and began the practice of law at Exeter in the spring of 1888. He was married to Anna Lena Gillan, April 24, 1890, and they moved in September of that year to Cozad, Dawson county, Nebraska, where he continued his practice in the legal profession. On his election to County attorney in 1896, he moved to Lexington, where he resided until his death. During his residence at Lexington, he was active in the practice of law, serving three terms as County Attorney. He also served as Mayor and as Councilman of the City of Lexington. He was appointed and served one term as Judge of the Thirteenth Judicial District. During the World War he served as chairman of the Dawson Council of Defense. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1912, which nominated Woodrow Wilson for President. At the time of his death he had retired from the legal practice. He had been Master Mason for over 45 years and an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 25 years. For many years he served as trustee and member of the official board. His influence and character was a distinct asset to the church. He was a charter member of the Eastern Star chapter at Cozad. He belonged and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club. On May 25, 1931, the summons came, and he passed peacefully to his reward. Age 79, 2 months and 13 days. He leaves in his immediate family his wife, Anna L.; a daughter, Grace Faye Parrish, of Mitchell, Nebraska; four sons, George Paul, of Omaha, Nebraska; LeRoy A., of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Silas Y., of Lexington, Nebraska, and Bruce C., of Thedford, Nebraska. He also leaves two brothers, four sisters, two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o’clock, May 27th at the M.E. Church, Lexington, Rev. Bernhard Johansen, pastor of the church officiating. His remains were laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, ceremonies at the grave in charge of Thistle Lodge No. 61, A.F. & A.M., Frank M. Johnson, a member of the local bar, delivered the funeral oration. The pall bearers were Judge I.J. Tewell, of Sidney; N.M. York; T.M. Cook and J.C. Welden, all being members of the Masonic fraternity, and the latter five being members of the local bar.
