They are buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Marion, Iowa. ~0bit~George Cook was born April 18, 1830, and died April 14, 1904, lacking but four days of being 74 years old. He was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, and was the oldest child of Charles and Mary Cook. He came with his parents and one sister to America when he was nine years of age, living his boyhood days in New York City and Williamsville, near Buffalo, where he received his education and learned his trade of cabinet maker. His father, later, moved to Waterloo, N.Y., where he built a large furniture and undertaking factory. On April 3, 1855, George was married to Martha Jane Alsop and together they came to Marion, Iowa to make their home. Here he took up his trade, later entering the furniture business which he pursued for ten years, and then carried on a wood working plant and cabinet making business until his health failed several years ago. He united with the Presbyterian Church of Marion in 1876 of which he was a faithful member until his death. He has been a resident of Marion nearly fifty years, and has seen the town in its infancy and Linn County develop from an unpopulated wilderness to one of the most prosperous in the state. By his death the community has lost an honored and respected citizen, one who has left a record for straight forwardness and honorable dealings with all. As a neighbor and friend he was always trueful, and kind; as a father always thoughtful and loving and working for the best interests of his children. A kind, loving husband thinking no burden too great to be borne for his loved ones. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two daughters, Hattie, and Mrs. Inez Berry and one son, Harley A; four grandchildren; two brothers and a multitude of friends.
