Read More	Source: Stanton Register May 18, 1944 George Daum was born on Dec. 7, 1879 at Gubbersburg, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, the son of George and Katherine Daum. As a child, he was baptized in the German State church at Kirch-Brombach, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. After attending the Lutheran church school there, he was confirmed in May, 1894, in the Lutheran faith, to which he remained faithful to the end of his life. In 1903, he followed his sister, Katharine, who had married Oscar Reinhardt, to America, arriving January 4, 1904. He worked for his brother-in-law on the latter's farm northwest of Altona. Here he remained until his marriage, February 27, 1908, to Minna Koehlmoos of Pilger. Pastor Schaller of Trinity Lutheran Church. Altona performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Daum now settled on the farm 2 1/2 miles north and one mile east of Pilger, where they lived until his death. As soon as he came to Wayne County, he became affiliated with Trinity Lutheran church of Altona. Here he had his two children baptized and the older ones attended parochial school and confirmation instruction. The Lord blessed him and his wife with five sons and three daughters, all of whom survive their father. In 1930, he transferred his membership and that of his family to St. Johns Lutheran church of Pilger. Of this church he was a voting member until his death. Mr. Daum had been ailing for a number of years, so he was unable to do his own farm work. During the last year, he became steadily weaker, being affiliated especially with a dropsical condition that affected his heart. On Maundy Thursday of this year he was still able to partake of Lord's Supper at church. At that time, he realized that his end was near. This thought he repeated various tunes when the pastor visited him and his invalid son, Elmer. Last week, Friday, May 12, 1944, he retired in the afternoon, as other days, to his room to rest. When he did not respond to summons to supper, he was found to have passed away peacefully of a heart attack. He attained the age of 64 years, 5 months and 5 days. He is survived by his bereaved wife, Mrs. Minna Daum of Pilger and 5 sons. Otto of Pilger, Edwin of Wayne, George, serving as corporal in the United States army in England, William, a PFC. in the United States army on active service in Italy, and Elmer at home, 3 daughters, Amanda, Mrs. Alfred Sedlak, Winside, Hlldegard, Mrs. Richard Dreyer of Pilger and Emelia, Mrs. Dick Grashorn of Wisner, 9 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Oscar Reinhardt of Altona, and a brother, Heinrich of Germany, of whom, however, no word has been received for several years; also a host of other relatives and friends. He received Christian burial on May 15, 1944 in services conducted at his home and in St. Johns Lutheran Church of Pilger, with the pastor of that church, the Reverend Walter H. Koenig in charge. The funeral sermon was based on the words of Jesus recorded in John 14: 2 "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you, for I go to prepare a place for you. And If I go and prepare a place for you; I will come again and. receive you unto myself; that where I am, ye may be also."
