Butterfield, whose death came suddenly Sunday afternoon of heart trouble. The services were conducted at the home by Dr. Frank G. Smith, pastor of the Central Congregational church of Omaha, and the Rev. E Merle Adams of the First Congregational church of Norfolk, of which Mr. Butterfield was a member. Following the reading of the scriptures and prayer by Mr. Adams, Dr. Smith delivered the funeral sermon. He asked the question, "What is life? Whence does it come, and whither does it go?" Shall we find the answer in the realm of literature, of science, or where? he continued. The answer, he said, is in human experience and in the experience of God. Dr. Smith paid a fine tribute to the life of Mr. Butterfield in this community, speaking especially of his generous spirit and his helpful and kindly life. Two numbers were sung by a quartet consisting of H. C. Fitzpatrick, Walter Steffen, Howard Stark, and A. A. Olson. Simple commital services at the cemetery followed the rites in the home. The pallbearers were J. B. Maylard, A. T. Hutchinson, Jack Koeningstein, R. S. Finley, Dr. E. L. Brush, C. P. Parish, C. A. Durland, and A. R. Bigelow of Wisner, S. D. Many out-of-town friends, including a number from Omaha, attended the services. Mr. Butterfield is survived by Mrs. Butterfield; his mother, Mrs. W. H. Butterfield; a daughter, Edith, who came from New York for the funeral, and a son, William, a student at the University of Nebraska; two sisters, Mrs. P. H. Salter of Norfolk, and Mrs. J. C. E. Weills of Medford, Ore., and one brother, Spencer Butterfield of Osmond.
